New Motorcycle Regs for Navy Region Southeast

As it has been noted, SGLI and Death Gratuity ($500,000 combined total) get paid regardless of how you get killed. We had a case last year where a senior enlisted member killed his son, beat his wife half to death, jumped on his Harley and killed himself by driving head on into traffic. He was not wearing PPE either. We still paid his full list of benefits.

The line of duty determination comes into play for the Survivor Benefit Plan. I have seen LOD's come back that have prevented survivors from getting the SBP. It sucks to tell the family that they are not going to get that benefit, but misconduct is what it is and we just follow the rules.

I have never seen an instance where medical bills are not paid due to a LOD investigation. If the Navy were going to go after that money, it makes sense that they would also go after bedside travel assistance funds. Never seen that either.

IMHO, you should follow the rules, because they are the rules. If someone is not going to wear a helmet because and are not concerned about having their brains splattered all over the pavement, I doubt that they are going to worry about medical bills either.

Back to work. Football season is over and it seems that sailors don't have anything to live for anymore.

Helmet can not be a brain bucket?? What about the other partial coverage helemts?? (I couldn't tell from what was posted...)
 
I, and many others, have been wearing brain buckets on base in Cali. So that might be a change for some, or the gate guards just didn't know. But considering we took the required safety courses wearing them, it is probably the former.

The latest change to the Traffic Safety instruction says brightly colored upper garment is highly recommended. Is there some other instruction or message that says it is required?
 
I just found the CNRSE message that says brightly colored during the day and reflective at night.

Yeah, it was not well publicised. I only heard about it while riding home from KBay one night after putting in one of those unplanned 14 hour days. Stopped at the gas station and a cop followed me in. I thought for sure it was because I had forgotten my vest; he told me that the vest requirement was gone. He just wanted to ask me about my bike.

I'm not a rider myself, but I think you can wear whatever as long as you have protective gear on. I have seen many different uniforms on motorcycle riders. If it's a liberty uniform, I don't see why not.

BBBJ is right: You can ride in whatever you want as long as you have the proper PPE. I've seen plenty of sailors riding to work in their NWUs; wouldn't think khakis were an issue but might be a bit cold in the wind.
 
You can wear Khaki's but would have to wear a different shoe to cover the over the ankle requirement. Then change shoes when you get to work. Plus a jacket and something reflective. Khaki's alone don't meet the hi vis requirement.
