Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
garmin-gpsmap-60c.jpg

I'm just about to by a new GPS. The model is the Garmin GSMAP 60C. I was planning on using it for auto navigation, as well as a periodic hike in the woods/geocache. Anyone own this model or one similar that could let me know if they were satisfied?

I own the 60Cx, which takes the much larger micro SD cards and had a few other good features. i like it a lot, use it for both driving and hiking. The auto navigation feature isn't that great, but it is very handy in the city if you want to locate something or just figure out where you are (which I never need to know, I always know where I am). The screen is great and the accuracy is really good, even on steep slopes in narrow valleys under lots of trees.

The garmin map software is not great, though the street maps are handy to have. I wouldn’t buy the outdoor mapping software, just carry a good map (which you should anyhow). I didn’t get the baro altimeter or mag compass feature, since I carry a separate compass anyhow and you have to know your local altimeter setting before you can use the baro and it’s hard to pick up ATIS w/o a radio J

I recommend it. Bought mine of Ebay for about $375.

I have a garmin rhino 120. Cant speak for the auto-nav, but for hiking i was very pleased. If you went with a friend and got separated, you could also transmit your location to each other. i thought that was pretty cool. Never been disappointed with a garmin product.

So it's a green light then. The package comes with the city mapping software. Thanks.

I've owned the 60C for about 3 years and have really enjoyed it. I know that more recent versions have more memory and let you use SD cards. If you're going a really long distance (especially through heavily populated areas), you'll have to reload your map w/ only 56MB of memory. The road navigation feature is really good IMO, and although it's a little cumbersome to punch in a street address w/o a real keyboard, the 60C is a good compromise between some of the larger (read non-portable) models. When I would go on long road trips, I would bring my laptop along so I could load stuff as required. I have the maps for "National Parks West" which have more detailed info as well as marginally useful topo maps. I would buy one again, no regrets. Hope that helps.

Hey FMRAM,

I've never tried it but it seems like it would be a lot of fun. Congrats again! I love getting cool things in the mail.:D

It's a good time, but when you describe it to someone, they look at you like your from Mars.

Of course! I just started a couple of weeks ago.

Which model did you settle on? The 60C? I'm not into any of that geo-caching non-sense, but I do like to take it hiking/sailing/4-wheeling. I recommend investing in some good map software too like National Geographic's Topo, or Delorme's Topo USA.

You can do some pretty neat stuff with both like upload/download your GPS waypoints and routes, plus it's nice to have the ability to print out high quality maps at home.
