
Navy to name aircraft carrier for Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller
Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller was the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for valor. He died while serving on a ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in November 1943.

I can get down with this. I will certainly take any service member over those named for most politicians... especially a few off the top of my head...
I will say the Brits take the cake on naming conventions. Their fleet in the early 19th century was like a floating thesaurus.
