I think there is a bit of a 'false choice' where a decision on retaliation has to be made NOW when it was only a single missile, a response can definitely wait for a single nuclear strike that does not hold the entire at risk.



That is an extremely complex targeting problem, much more so when the Sprint was in service in the 70's. That is why GBI's intercept the missiles much earlier in flight, better chance to hit less targets. You can at least partially solve the targeting problem by arming the interceptors with nukes themselves like the Sprint was but that causes a whole host of additional issues, and and even then it still doesn't solve the problem if the missile is MIRV'd and/or has countermeasures.

Missile defense is a hard problem to solve, that is the biggest reason it costs so much money.

Thanks for the input. The small nuke on Sprint was the point of my query. Given the binary choice of a 2 kiloton nuke 40 miles up or a 200 kiloton nuke arriving on target, it seems as if the former would be the lesser of two evils in a rogue nation scenario.

That has been a conscious choice on our part not to arm the GBI's with nuke warheads, a choice that I think is certainly debatable given the options you point out. The 'side effects' of a nuke going off in space would likely be pretty serious, even drastic in some scenarios, though less serious than having Chicago hit by a nuke.

The ONLY use for the existing BMD or "Golden Dome" (worst name ever) is to defeat a single rogue or accidental launch. Any conceivable system will be overwhelmed or circumvented by China or Russia.

If you want to prevent nuclear war, there are far better ways to spend our money, from counterproliferation to nuclear and conventional deterrent.

Back in the 1970s, they couldn't hit shit, hence the need for a nuke to be assured of a kill.
