ATO: Okay, switching to FLIR to ID the target...that's a sail boat. It's not one of our COIs.
ZULU: That's supposed to be a Boghammer. Hold on a minute.
This also happened in the P-3 sim. But at least the sim video didn't turn all red and make it impossible to tell what's going on when a target got hit like in this stupid film.

Just watched this on Prime. I'd say it fits in the 'so bad it's good category', though it does have some nice shots of helicopters flying around.

Did you notice how Cage and Jones started running a slight second before the explosions started occurring? :)

A good one to watch is Civil War with Kirsten Dunst. It is about what a real civil war in modern day America would look like. It is not an action film, but has some very intense action scenes, and the final battle over Washington D.C. is super intense. I've read some say it has the best portrayal of modern soldering tactics put to film.

The film itself is about a group of photojournalists trying to make it to D.C. to try and interview the President (now a dictator) before the rebel forces reach it. There are no political statements in the film (like no exposition as to what caused the war) which ticked a lot of people off because so many want the film to say "the other side" are fascists. The rebels are an alliance of Texas and California (with presumably other states allied) called the Western Forces (you can see how the filmmakers sought to neutralize any trying to read modern politics into it!).

A theme of the film, in addition to showing how bad a civil war would be, is also a critique of the photojournalism profession, as the journalists seem more caught up in who can get the best picture as opposed to really caring about the war itself.

It is an upsetting film though. Very brutal.

Have you seen Warfare yet? It's directed by the same guy as Civil War. Both are excellent.

My problem with the Civil War movie is the reliance on a geographic nexus to manage the war (North v South or West v East). Should the U.S. fall into another civil war it won’t be like that - it will be more akin to a massive crime wave of individual attacks representing on “side” or another, but not directed or managed. Indeed, it would be much uglier than a conventional civil war.

Still, as entertainment the movie was solid and worth watching.

:::SPOILER ALERT:::

Well that is one variant based on our current political situation. A lot could change in future decades though. Did you know the guy who murders the two Asian guys is Kirsten Dunst's husband? The actor scheduled to play the role was sick that day so since her husband is an actor too and he was on set that day, she proposed having him play the role. Thing is he really looks the part too! Three parts I did find questionable (possible spoilers):

1) When the Apache lowers itself to fire at the forces defending D.C., I don't think it would do that in reality as there would be too big a risk of someone firing an RPG or whatnot at it. Also clearly a modified Apache with that mini gun. And I may be mistaken, but that Apache sounded an awful lot like a two-bladed Huey:)

2) The President would be hiding in the bunker underneath the White House at that point

3) I don't think a Humvee would be able to knock The Beast out of commission with a simple ram like that. The Beast is supposed to be anywhere from 8 to 12 tons. A Humvee weighs anywhere from 5,000 lbs (unarmored) to 10,000 lbs (up-armored), so about five tons at the most. And armored cars have special protection for the wheel wells precisely for things like that, also so they can ram their way through other vehicles. So that seemed a bit lame.

Also P-8 sim, but haven’t been in one in 3.5 years so not sure if that glitch still happens.

Streaming service?
It’s still in theatres so wait a little while.

it’s good, but it was definitely made with no assistance from DOD because it’s a bit touchy.

The opening of a bunch of dudes doing the group share drive video ritual though is some of the most real depiction of living deployed life you’ll see. Right there with the whole “clean this S up” part and hazing the new guy of Lone Survivor.

The director is a former Navy SEAL I believe.

Yeah a bunch of the people from the specific battle were involved and show up in cast photos during the credits.

It’s definitely visceral and as real as any normal person who’s never seen that kind of ugliness would what to see. It’s not something to take your wife to if you say just watched your kid leave for basic or something.
