Exactly. Green Berets and these denote Special Forces:
Special Ops is a catch all term for all assets within the US Special Operations Command. Anything thats not, is techinally a conventional unit, regardless how "special" their work may be. Additionally, Marine Corps MEU (SOC)'s are an ongoing subject of debate.
My buddy has been National Guard, as a Cav Scout, for 5 years, he is an E-5. He has already passed the SF tryouts, but he needs to wait until after OCS to find out what his job is going to be.
And not to get off onto the topic of what special forces is....
Anyway, any form of a gun is out... I'd like this to be a suprise.... not to mention he already has a 1911. Looking at the $200 or less range.

After SFAS and the "Q Course", to join an active duty Special Forces A-team, you must be an E-6 (Staff Sergeant) or higher. In order to be a Special Forces Warrant Officer, you must be an E-6 or higher, and already graduated from SFAS/Q. For commissioned officers, you must be an O-3 (Captain), no lower, and usually no higher, as leadership within SF is usually promoted "in house".
You are right, that most guys that successfully complete SFAS/Q are previously with the Ranger Batts, but ANY male soldier can apply to attend SFAS (but if you're not Infantry, or at least a combat arms MOS, you'll likely get denied).
"Special Forces" ONLY includes the Special Forces Groups. "US Army Special Operations Command" is the organizational body that oversees all SPECIAL OPERATIONS units within the Army, which includes the 75th Ranger Regiment, Special Forces, Civil Affairs, PsyOps, 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment), and the 1SFOD-D (1st Special Forces Operational Detatchment - Delta) aka "Delta Force". As you can see, "Special Forces" is a very specific, and exclusive, term.
Damn, its really sad that I know all this crap offhand. Back before graduating high school, I was strongly considering enlisting in the Army, and wanting to go Airborne. So I spent alot of time with my nose in books on anything and everything Airborne, including Special Operations topics. Man, I was a dork...
