It turns out that I have been given addmission to UC San Diego for this fall and yes, I did accept. What i want to know is what you guys think about federal loans vs. Marine Corps loan. Either way there is a "commitment". I guess the only real difference is that I will owe a few more years to the Corps as opposed to oweing cash to the govt. Will someone help me a little here? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Raptor,
Congrats on getting in to UCSD -- that's quite an accomplishment in itself. Sorry I don't know much about the loan stuff, but I graduated UCSD in '99 and I'm still in the area.

One of the great things about UCSD for us wannabes is that it is under the flight path from MCAS Miramar out to the Pacific Ocean. Get ready to start seeing Hornets and lots of helos fly over campus pretty low. The north fields up at RIMAC are the best place to see them.

Anyway, if you have any UCSD questions feel free to email me (on profile page) and I'll do my best.

I don't know about loans from the Military. The federal loans are the subsidized and unsubsidized loans that you get through the financial aid office and the bank of your choosing. In the end, you have 10 years to pay them off begining with a 6 month grace period. There is also the Federal Perkins loan. If you can get that one then get it. 9 month grace period and the loan is from the school using federal money, not a bank.

One of the guys on here used to work in a Financail Aid office. Dave maybe?

Hey thanks for the infor airgreg. I got a couple of questions for you. Also, i'm glad to hear that I will see helos and hornets fly over(especially happy about the hornets). I was wondering what kind of jobs are available on campus and where I can find some good reasonably priced housing? Thanks again man.
