Neat Military Schools

Since I have a relatively easy staff tour going, I've found myself interested in unusual military schools where I might learn neat stuff and/or get some good TDY. If you've been to an interesting school, or heard of an interesting school, such as Advanced Evasion, post it in this forum.

I just got back from the Army's Northern Warfare Training Center (NWTC) where I attended the Cold Weather Orientation Course (CWOC). This course is aimed at mid-grade to senior leaders both enlisted and officer (we had several E-8/9s and my boss, a Navy CAPT in addition to a butt-ton of dirty hinges from the Army and your's truly). It's a gentlemen's course, relatively easy but very informative about how to operate in very cold weather and how to use the Army's ECWICS clothing system (which totally rocks). It's also located in one of the most amazingly beautiful places on earth. I'll upload some pictures when I have

The CAPT and I were the first Navy dudes to attend their course and they were fairly tickled to have us attend.

NWTC runs several other courses such as mountaineering, a much more involved cold weather course aimed at NCOs and JOs and a handful of other interesting courses. They are also happy to provide specifically tailored training to a unit with unique requirements. The cadre is very good.

Go sign up to shoot in this year's Atlantic or Pacific Fleet Shooting Matches. Newbies welcome...assuming you haven't done that before. Don't forget, however, that your staff billet (however "easy") is there for a reason. "Git 'er done!" there first...extracurricular activities should be on a strictly NIB basis. You don't want to get the rep as the guy/gal who "was always away attending some class". You get the idea.

Just did INTAC (Individual Anti-Terrorism Awareness Course) for people going to billets putting them at higher risk. 4 days of lectures/powerpoint (75% painful, 25% fascinating). All the classroom is worth it once you get to do the tactical weapons course (all done with a contracted company, AWESOME, real-world moving/dynamic shooting, never ever thought I would be able to shoot an M9 as well as I do now, it's sick) and the evasive driving module (2 days, they call it "Transporter School," high speed driving on a 2 mile 10 turn course, J-turns, P.I.T. maneuvers, up-armored vehicle q-course, ambush escapes, barricade smash-throughs, driving from the right seat). If you have a billet that qualifies, fight to go.

The joint MOUT training course at Fuji instructed by 2nd Recon and Japanese forces was the best urban training I've ever done and the facilities were top notch. They have a full mock city with 4- story hotels, city hall, underground subway system, etc. By the time my team was done with the course we were pretty fricken smooth and efficient. I was really impressed by how professional the instructors were and how great the atmosphere was. Definitely the best training course I've had the opportunity to do.

Well, this school was directly applicable to my job, so it was an easy sell - and i have a boss who is all about extracurricular schools precisely because i get the job done. If i can tie it into my job, all the better. But I hear you, don't want to be that guy.

I was about to recommend Dynamics of International Terrorism and the course a step up from it because it fun, applicable, and near Destin, but damn. I can't compete.

I seem to remember Colin Powell saying that of all the classes he ever had to take while he was in the Army, that was his favorite one.
