ok, so this is trivial, but when your on a ship, do you have to pay for food, or is it just free for the taking?

and is it the same for enlisted and officers?

i remember hearing from one of the units Lts that officers pay for food in a pool before they serve on the ship. But once you're on it's supposed to be free for the taking from the wardrooms.

Is this correct?

Food on the ship is NOT FREE!
You would think it would be, but unfortunately we had to write a check monthly to the ship.
I think it comes out to $7 or something a day.
Which is not that much.
This is what you get a little pay called BAS for...Basic Allowance for Sustenance.
Seems crazy to me, they give you the pay in your check only to later turn around and write them a check giving it back.

They also have ship stores you can buy those extra favorite little snacks, but we found it cheaper to stock up before my husband left.

Wardroom dues baby. For my 99 cruise on the Connie, we paid $150 a month for food. For the three months I was on the Carl Vinson in 2001, we paid $180 a month. The idea behind it, as I have been told, was to get better meals and food for the wardroom.

It works that way becuase officers allways revieve that allowance for food, every month. Enlisted guys on the ship don't. Enlisted guys only get that money if food is not available. For example taking leave was allways cool when I was enlisted cause my paychecks would be a little bit bigger.
