I don't know much of the Germans other than they're notoriously efficient and competent, so my reply is purely speculation. But my bet is on the Hornet (suh-prise suh-prise!). Naval aviators are second to none, with the Israelis as a very close second.

well since i think those planes are fairly comparable, id go with the hornet do to pilot skill.

Mig-29 is a scary little plane in the way of manueverability and durability, especially in the hands of a competent pilot.

If the pilots themselves are both of equal skill, simply engaged in dogfight, then I'd have to say the Mig-29.

Otherwise, definately the F/A-18.
...and in a dogfight versus the Su-27 series, forget it. Them's is scary.

good points. su27-oh dont get me started. i got in enough of a flame war yesterday regarding that to last a while. "them's is scary." nice, i like it.

that's actually fairly impressive considering the german pilots had probably been drinking for at least 3 hrs prior to the exercises.

That show is what I am referencing here. The VFA-106 guys did fairly well. But then so did the Luftwaffe boys. the 50/50 ratio was correct, and the reasons for this are somewhat interesting. When the Luft Mig-29s are held to Soviet style tactics, the Navy boys kicked their buts. But eventually, according to the show, the Luft boys will start fighting with their own tactics and equipment. (at one point some F-4s show up and promptly get shot down)And they kicked the F-18s butts pretty good. Now by equipment I mean the helmet-mounted sight. This is a HUGE advantage to them, as long as they can transverse past your 90 on either side, they can lock on. And thats what they did to our guys. Also I remember the 18 guys saying not to take the fight vertical, cuz the 29 would have an advantage. There was one scene where the 18 went vertical, stalled out, and fell like a leaf. Pretty cool cockpit camera footage on that one. The best part about it was to recover he took his hands OFF the controls, apparently the F-18 has a auto-recover system.

All together, it was a sweet show. I also highly recommend it.

yeah those funky FBW planes.

Actually, I've heard the MiG-29 has one slightly minor seeming but major to fighter pilots disadvantage...a blind spot in the rear since it doesnt have a bubble canopy. So an F-14 squadron tangled w/them after Serbia, and that's how they got one of the wins.

Did ya'll know that a few years back the Air Force actually bought several Mig-29's from Monrovia (pretty sure on the country)? They said they were not going to use them for air to air combat testing....but then they show up on the Nellis flight line.....hhhhhmmmmm

I'm looking for the article now. Will post.

hmmmmmm, yes indeed. the navy purchased 2 su27's as well. there's a picture of them in that article by rear adm gillcrist. it's weird to see the soviet (russian) plane with "NAVY" painted on the vert stabalizer. they want to buy more of em! i know it! it's so tempting, isnt it? it reminds me of that movie "Behind Enemy Lines" when the serbs are scouring through the f18 reckage and they see "navy" painted on a piece, someone exclaims "Yankee Navy Assholes".

Vegita-

I wasn't aware that there was anything to "defend" with this post. Perhaps you could enlighten me with what I "should" have talked about.
