Does anyone know anything about going active reserve? I'd like to do it over the next year while I'm waiting for OCS. But I don't know all the in's and out's - and since I'm already sworn in my recruiters not much help. Do they let people out of reserve comittments to go active? Someone said I would have to get a conditional release to ensure that I'm able to attend OCS? Any help would be apprieciated.

I was in the Active Reserves after I came off of active duty and when I was thinking of reenlisting before I started collage, I was required to get a conditional release from my Commanding Officer. I really don't know if they will let you join enlisted side reserves if your sworn in for an Officer program. You could ask you local reserve recruiter, but just be cautious cause they are like Used Car Salesmen and will tell you anything to join.

Just be aware that if you go active reserves without any prior service, you are sent to a three week or so bootcamp and then spend a lot of time getting rated (a Rate in the Navy is your job and job title, like I was an AE = Aviation Electrician's Mate). So there is a lot of time to invest into it and if you get deployed to Ass-crack-istan or something, there is a chance it could interfer with your OCS date.

Best advice, knock heads with your local Reserve Recruiters and get EVERYTHING on paper, keep copies of everything and keep it all cleared through your Officer recruiter.

hey gool. don't do it man. Joining the reserves without prior service and you might end up in boot camp for 9 weeks in Great Mistakes. When I was in boot camp we had reserve guys with us and they went for the whole time. anyway I don't believe youcan go reserve now anyway. As I understand it you have to be released from the reserve by your CO Before getting accepted. hope this helps

have I got a long way to run...

active reserve you mean SelRes (selected reserve) aka weekend warrior. or do you mean enlisting as an USNR and being active for a year?

I was talking weekend warrior - but I spoke with a few people at the recruiting command. They say I could do it, but there was a good chance of losing my position in OCS - no way man! I'll just tough it out and try to get some hours in the air. Thanks for the help fella's.

Hey good - if you want to get active in something, it might be worth looking into Civil Air Patrol, not only does it look good and add up the brownie points with the Navy. But a lot of Senior squadrons do fly and are active in SAR and other things and it can be a lot cheaper than going the normal route. I've been wanting to get active in something else besides school, work and adding to my flight time, so I've been thinking about it some.
