NAS Fallon

I'm hoping I put this in the right spot...

We're hitting our last year here in Japan and NAS Fallon for SWTI (is that the right acronym?) is part of the discussion now for his next shore tour.

I'm curious as to what the schedules are like and what that tour will be like for him.

I'm not concerned about the base, area, etc as I'm pretty familiar with the Tahoe/Reno greater area and love it, but I don't really know anything about what the actual "job" would be like for him and what I should expect.

If anyone has had a tour there or has a little insight I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks

I can't speak to the "job" but I grew up in Tahoe, and Fallon is not Reno, nor is it Tahoe. So just beware that because you are familiar with those two places that doesn't mean anything about what Fallon might be like, they are very very different places. Just an FYI, I may be talking out my ass and you grew up there as well, but don't expect Fallon to be like Reno or Tahoe in any way...

I don't expect it to be exactly like that, but I'm just thinking in terms of things to do on the weekend, etc.

Although the rest of your post implies getting stationed there, the above quote is a bit ambiguous. It is possible that he could attend the SWTI course at Fallon as part of his training for his shore tour somewhere else. But I think you are asking about getting stationed at NAS Fallon as a SWTI instructor at NSAWC, correct?

I was there...NSAWC....for about 4.5 years. CVW visits will often = 12+ hour days, sometimes 6 days a week. Dunno about the OPSEC issues WRT to how often they train or how many show up in a year.......but I will say that he will not be lacking for flight time.

Things to do....outdoor stuff...dirt bikes, ATVs, fishing, hunting, skiiing. There may not be enough 'cultured' things to do, depending on what your likes/dislikes are. I work on base, feel free to shoot me a pm if you guys have questions.

Yes, I understand that CVW goes on det to train, but this would be as an instructor (from what I understood).

Attending the SWTI course as a student is not the same thing as Airwing Fallon, but I understand what you are saying.

As far as I know, there are no SWTI Instructors on AW, but I know two guys who have been instructors, worked with the SWTI guys for Airwing Fallon and Desert Rescue, and I have briefed at the SWTI course, so I can give you some impressions.

The SWTI team is always getting ready for some big event, maybe an Airwing training evolution (mainly when the helos come), Desert Rescue, a SWTI class, etc. So, I get the impression they have a lot going on during the events and especially during the time leading right up to them. In between the events there is more down time, but I don't think it is the "down" time you hear about at some shore tours.

The NSAWC SWTI's are the community experts in weapons and tactics and as such have various other responsibilities and commitments. I have seen them at TACMAN conferences in Vegas and a couple other places around the country.

Speaking of travelling, the SWTI course itself is taught in part at Fallon, and then the ASW portion takes place either in San Diego and Jax/AUTEC.

When your husband first gets there he has a lot of work to do. He will go through the SWTI course as a student. Also during the first part of his time there he will become an expert in one of subject areas. So, he will be back in the books learnin'.

Anyways, I have gotten an impression that it is a shore duty that takes quite a bit of time during the week and there is light to moderate travel, but is personally and professionally rewarding. Out of the two guys I know personally, one has screened for HS command and the other is probably on his way to doing so in the next few years.

Other than CVW training, do the SWTI guys work with the stiff wingers much, both trainers and/or trainees?

That's exactly what I was fishing for (I know I did a piss poor job at trying to get that across).

Thanks for the info.

No problem. I can try and get you in touch with one of the guys I know. I know where he is (but no contact info), and he has a known associate who has frequented this board.

Not much, as I recall. I was there from being a plankowner (96) up through January of 01. During non CVW events, we spent most of our time doing mountain flying training....flying over Tahoe and hoping to see nekkid women on boats.
