All right, I know all you young guys are working out for the application PRT or are spending all your time in the pool running on the beach. My wife is training for a half marathon (her first, hadn't run over a mile three weeks ago). She is listening to whatever our son's have on their MP3 players. I want to program some good tunes for her to run to. What are your suggestions? No hip hop please. I'm thinking stuff like Sammy Hagar's "I can't drive 55" or Golden Ear Ring "Radar Love". Doesn't have to be classic rock though.

SEA STORY ALERT Last time I ran a sanctioned event it was a 10K on the deck of the USS Ranger, underway, in conjunction with the San Diego Marathon. Our times were radioed back to San Diego and one of our guys actually finished in the top 5 or so. It was real work. The ship was making 20-25 knots of wind over the deck and the seas were rough enough the deck pitched so high you frequently saw only blue sky when you turned at the stern to run forward. Head long into the wind one way and the wind noticably pushing your back the other. Messes up you paceing pretty good.
END SEA STORY

Techno. If she likes it. Seriously, it's normally a good beat to run with. Especially the higher energy stuff.

waiting not so patiently for OCS...
Pretty much all Led Zep except "Stairway to Heaven" works well. Don't stop with just "Kashmir"

For long runs, when I listen to music (not normally), I like more laid back music...Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, etc.

Widespread panic is new to me. What is it like?

Its a jam band similar to old Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Phish, etc. I'll admit, its "long-hair hippy music" as my pops calls it, but its good and mellow. Perfect for that long run.

It works for me... but your wife might not be up for it.

I have never been in to punk or anything, but I just made up a mix CD that has a lot of it for working out to.

Refused - New Noise (Awesome song to get hyped up to!)
Hellogoodbye - Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn
Jimmy Eat World - Sugar on Asphalt
Jimmy Eat World - Get it Faster
Thrice - Deadbolt
Happy Camper - Wave the flag
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
The Offspring - Original Prankster

Try some of those out.

I am probably in the minority, but I like "anger music" when I run. Korn, Godsmack... you get the picture. The louder and more angry, the less I notice how much I hate running.

good running songs

Some songs that get me through 10-mile runs:
Scorpions: Rock You Like a Hurricane
New Radicals: Get What You Give
Men at Work: Got To Keep on Moving
Smashing Pumpkins: 1979
Jimmy Eat World: The Middle
Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit
...and pretty much any U2 song

Good luck!!

Metallica ONE!! This song will just be finishing by the time she is done running. haha. Kenny Chesney and some top gun music...Thats all she will need.

Great stuff guys. I don't think Korn and Godsmack will work for her though. Interesting mix out there. Keep'em coming.
