Multi worth it?

Trying to decide which flight course to tackle next semester and i'm holding off another semester before CFI, so I asked a couple other kids and they took multi, but I'm not sold on it. Pricey, and not sure I'll get any use out of it.

I'll have my commercial in a couple weeks, already got my instrument. Thinking maybe an advanced instrument course or something. Hell, aerobatic, i dunno. Got a couple years of school left anyway, so I could get my Multi later, too.

What do you think?

I would do CFI actually. You would easily be able to find a part/full time job being a cfi somewhere, espically in central FL. Multi looks good on paper but isnt worth much since you will have 0 hours of multi pic once you get it. (maybe 1.5 for a part 61 checkride....d@mn thost part 141 schools ;))

Get a job as a cfi, earn some money, and then get your multi. A good plan is to work at a fbo that has a multi engine airplane so once you get your multi and then mei, you can jump in and start to instruct in the multi. (Due to the FBO knowing you already and so on)

If you plan on flying for the military, the multi = useless.

CFI is always good to have, regardless of where you end up in your aviation career.

that's what i'm thinking.
since i have to relearn all this crap anyway, naval aviator style, might as well just get real good at single-engine brand fun.

make sure i know all the nit-picky detail stuff too. i'm going to go study my NDB service volumes.

Multi is probably not worth it yet. I agree on getting a CFI, I learn more from my students than I have in any of the other training. Another thing that is fun and reletively cheap, but gives you some good skills is tailwheel flying. Get a tailwheel endorsement. But if you have the money, and access to a good instructor and airplane near by, do some aerobatics. They are fun, difficult, and help you build termendous skills. Basically, if you are doing a military career, find what looks like fun and do it.

I am doing my multi right now. I have the money and yeah I probably won't use it in the military, but I haven't been pro-rec'd yet so I think of it as an insurance policy. If I can't make it into the Navy as a pilot at least I can then proceed with a civilian career.

If I had been final select for SNA, then yeah I wouldn't do it, but right now everything is up in the air and I have to assume that I will stay a civilian pilot out of college.

just found out that i actually am REQUIRED to get my multi to graduate.

what the sh!t is that?

think i'm going to put it off and do my CFI stuff first, complex instrument course and aerobatics oughta make for a fun fall semester. hell, it's all loans. i'll pay it off when i make my fortune in the military.

That sucks, just dont put it off. I have two friends who are 'trying' to commission with me in may. They are probably not going to due to not having there multi done in time. They will just have to push it back a couple of weeks.

No multi = no graduation = no commissioning = some pissed off people.

I wouldn't do that, if it is required do it. It is an easy rating, the tough part is finding money (always number one), then finding an airplane, an instructor, and time (especially if you are doing it Part 141 at college, with time blocks, stage checks, and the other fun stuff). It is just tough to find a twin and an instructor that is qualified. A CFI is easier since all you need is a complex and an instructor with 200 dual and 24 calendar months with a CFI rating.

If you are at a college flight program I would recommend doing multi first and CFI next. CFI is mostly ground work too so that makes it easier and cheaper the only hard part is finding an extremely good CFI who will push you hard both in the air and on the ground. I had a crappy CFI who didn't care about my training, what an a-hole, just used me for flight time and money.

That's the spirit! My thoughts exactly. In reality, I'm a 28 year old man without a pot to piss in neck deep in debt (college loans and a massive credit card bill) while my peers own their homes and cars, have $10,000 invested in IRA's and TSP's and are buying/have bought sailboats. But boy did I have a good time in college!

My point: try to limit how much debt you acrue. It'll haunt you later!

I had a lot of fun doing multi. The airplane actually wanted to fly, and then the first time you feather an engine - wow, what a feeling! I went on cross-countries to Las Vegas, San Diego, & Catalina Island. Even took one 1400 miles from ND to AZ. I guess it's all what you make of it, though.

Oh yeah, it is a relatively easy course....

the debts are gonna suck, no matter what, so best i can do is try and keep them in check.

getting really proficient in a single engine oughta set me up for being a better pilot. don't get me wrong, i'm actually very anxious to get in a multi, just trying to think of what's going to produce the best... evolution, i guess.
