Moving woes ** let the mover beware

Dang, my last move too.

A few years ago I PCS'd from Lemoore to Fallon. Seven boxes of my stuff missing, TV and microwave and VCR missing, and a lot of expensive cherry wood furniture was damaged. I settled my claim for about $9200.00.

So, in late November of 2006 I found myself PCSing for the last time. Didn't start off so good; HHG office did not call the movers until the afternoon they were supposed to be there. They did fess up to their mistake and did try to make it better.

Got settled in outside of Fallon in early December (I took all the most - likely - to - be - stolen - stuff) then asked for a pre-arranged...or so I thought....partial delivery. I found out that someone changed the proposed delivery date, (it was a pen change on their contract) only they forgot to tell me.

Lady at the storage place decided that she better do something, so we go through line by line the things I had previously asked, and they had previously agreed, to be included in the partial delivery.

10 days later we had the partial delivery at our door.

Soooo, today, 11 May, we are in a position to accept the rest of our stuff. The damage so far.....one broken park bench, one broken cement 'pissing boy'
(the kind you can hook up to a beer keg and have the beer come out his, uh you know), 16 missing NIB mummy sleeping bags, one missing Dillon reloading press AND..... a total of 22 missing boxes. I suppose there may be a few more damaged things, dunno and don't care at this point. I am beyond being pissed.

WTF, O. How does someone misplace 22 boxes full of my stuff?

After the miscues of our partial delivery the supply Officer, a really good guy, said to call him if anything else went wrong. If I had his home phone, I would call him tonight if for no other reason than to give him a laugh.

Oh, and there is evidence that a half dozen or so boxes were opened and searched after the pick up....stuff strewn about in the crates, wrapping tape taken off and replaced.

Moving companies, most of them, belong in a select catagory of people.

However, I will say that Ridgecrest Moving and Storage did many, many things extra for us as part of our China Lake to Lemoore PCS. Nothing missing and not so much as a scratch on any of our stuff.

Doing my 4th HHG move soon (2 weeks). Never had any major issues (scratch & dent type stuff), but know plenty of folks who have. For those shipping motorcycles, don't drain the gas/oil unless the movers specifically tell you too. In my experience, they would much rather you ride the bike up the ramp then try to push it up there and it saves a whole lot of hassle.

I've had all my HHGs in Waldorf, Md for the last 1.5 months.... It was Wheaton moving company....they shipped my bike and I picked it up from the warehouse a few weeks ago....not a scratch thank God..(I'll never have the gov't ship my bike again). I wonder about all my other stuff in the warehouse though. I just closed on a condo in Alexandria and I need to set up a drop off date.

First move overseas we learned not to let the movers pack anything for you or watch you do it for that matter. Dad got to Italy with about half the tools he left Florida with. You know that Dillon press is gone, take all of 20 minutes to sell that on Ebay.

All my tools go in a big lockable roll-away.

That's good to know...I'm leaving China Lake in June.

Another big thing a detective I worked with clued me in on was watch for any kind of individual marking of boxes. Anybody got any advice on how they ship their guns, having never had to do it short of throw them all in the trunk and drive it there Im looking to do this with some clue as to good ways vs bad ways.

Also for anybody using a storage facility a lot of them require it but if they dont make sure your using the disk locks that cost a little more. Somebody has to really really want into your stuff specifically because they'd have an easier time cutting a hole in the door to unload your stuff through then cut the lock off. Theres actually good documented data out there that people who break into storage lockup avoid those locks and move on.

Family owned busines...As I recall they drive newer Dodge pickups.

WHen I only had one gun safe, the big one. They moved in into my house on base for 60$.

Come move out time, I was going to take it in the rental truck. I went away to pick up two boxes at work. By the time I got back that 1100lb source of frustration was already in place inside the Uhaul van. I guess they took a short break from doing their thing and took care of business for me. They also loaded my very heavy work bench, again on their own time.

Great guys.

Either in a safe, or in your trunk. I am a fan of the trunk. Let the government pay you to move em...

I have had 4 pcs moves since 2004...some horror stories...especially when you only get reimbursed for about 15% of the value of your damaged goods.

This one, which I completed Thursday, has been the best. unfortunately the first thing I set up was my TV and Tiger woods golf...which means nothing else is going to get unpacked for about...oh...the next PCS move.

On our last move, at my wife's insistence, we sprang the $300 for full replacement insurance. We didn't have a single claim for the whole move. Maybe it was murphy's law, maybe we we would have been lucky anyway, or maybe the mover's were more careful because of the insurance. I don't know. It seems like a good investment (well, maybe not with 4 PCS moves in 3 years  ).

So does that mean we all have to pitch in and buy your old ass a graduation present?

I am thinking of a really good BIKE LOCK....

Since I may be returning, however briefly, to the scene of that crime, nothing would be more apropos. However, the perpetrators of the original act made use of bolt-cutters, no doubt checked out from the squadron tool room, so I don't know if that would help.

In the end, your warm wishes (or seething contempt, as the case may be) will be quite sufficient. :D
