In regards to the first incident... I dont remember it, and no one I know from home remembers it. Take it with a huge grain of salt.

Been there, done that: what a ride!
It happened

I just saw this, so thought I'd jump aboard.

It happened, exactly as I wrote it and Joe Kadow of Outback confirmed. For the record, both Mike Clausen and I interceded (successfully) to prevent the firing of that employee.

Unfortunately, Mike died on May 30 last year. The following is the text of the e-mail he sent me on Nov. 21, 2000:

Not to labor the point about officers writing letters.....But you saw Eddy Egan's letter precise and to the point (type of Aviators USMC 1 ea.)

Where as grunt officers try to Baffle the readers with long drawn out words even sometimes making up words that make them feel superior ( it is just BS and Baffle)

Aviation esp Combat Pilots have no need for that, because there write ups are read by mostly enlisted who want the point now ! Any other Air officers know what he is taking about....that is why Esp. Helicopter Pilots are as a rule generally a cut above any other officer in the Marine Inventory.......It is an unkept secret that when they give orders to "Go In" to a zone hot or not, they are right there...

That is as simple as I can put it for an Artillery Officer, Ihope that you know that there is no hard feelings or separation between us, I just like taking a Shot where a shot is due....

Mike copied me on the e-mail, which was sent to [name redacted] who was present in the restaurant at the time with us, but was not involved in the incident. The reason Mike sent it is that the person whose name I've with-held is the one who interposed himself into the incident and leaked the letter that I'd written to Outback - before they had a chance to respond and take corrective action. That was done in violation of my word that I'd hold back on any adverse action (including publicity) until they'd had a chance to "search and destroy". Outback acquitted themselves admirably. I said so then, and more so now (as they've proven by their generosity in Iraq).

Mike's note took a shot at that unidentified cannon cocker and stood up for the bond and teamwork that exists in Marine helicopter aviation.

I hope that this puts an end to "if it happened", but especially an end to the unwarranted and uninformed accusations that were made following the incident.

Mike was a fantastic guy, an enormous child with a generosity and heart as big as the ocean. He could just not stay on the pedestal that people tried to force him onto.
