Military Parades

So I was downtown on sunday watching the veterans day parade, and there were some retired marines in front of me, WWII types, and some active duty types to my right. They all saluted the Ensign as it passed via colorguard (not individual flags hanging off the back of the float), which I know is appropriate, but then there was some inconsistency with either group saluting O-types on the floats themselves. What's the proper form in this situation?

You know what? I don't think it really matters. Those guys are 80+ at the least. They can salute the flag, the officers, whatever they hold worthy of saluting.
I was proud to march with a bunch of WWII vets in Wichita Falls, including my dad, Cpl, USMC 1942-1945. He had one hand on a cane and one on my arm during the parade, so he wasn't really up for throwing off a snappy salute. It is sad the rate at which we are losing thesse guys. God bless them all. For the record, I rated a salute from about half of 'em:eek:

I was more questioning along the line of, say you're in uniform at one of these parades, and you're not 80 years old with more decorations that the white house christmas tree, what, other than the ensign, are you required to salute?

Dude, you are overthinking it. It is a parade......nobody in the parade is going to notice you or return your salute. Just like how I don't expect to get a salute from sailors across a parking lot from me who's path will never cross mine. Everyone salutes the national ensign as it passes out of respect, but it is not like passing the greeting of the day to a superior.

My educated guess would be that the same rules apply there as anywhere else you are in uniform.

Anyone in uniform that outranks you and anyone out of uniform that you know outranks you should be saluted.

Don't be stingy. You might get tired but keep in mind it is still a sign of respect and a greeting. When in doubt.....

When an 85 year-old Marine is hanging on to your right arm, you just nod politely at the Air Force generals and carry on down the road...

But for you, Cleonard, an answer. It is always cool to salute those that outrank you and the flag. It's a sign of respect and it would take a special kind of douche to not acknowledge it. All the best.
