Medical Requirments Officer vs Enlisted

mich313

Hello everyone.

I am in the process of seeking an officer commission. Should I not receive a pro-rec, I have already decided to pursue the enlisted route.

My question is, if I am PQ as an officer, does that take care of medical requirements for enlistment as well? Or is there a different process required medically for enlisting?

Thanks!

Hello everyone….Thanks!
mich313: Quick answer to your direct question: I'm pretty sure that if you're PQ for Officer you're PQ for enlisting.

That said, you'll receive numerous comments/responses, I'm sure, but I just looked at your Profile Page/Info Page and would not, in good conscience, recommend that you enlist if you don't get Pro-Rec'd in the near-term. You have 4+ years of "age eligibility" remaining for various commissioned paths, and I just think that with your background and educational experience, you might feel frustrated going that route…the whole "the clock is ticking while I build a whole new reputation" thing, while perhaps doing something that isn't near and dear to your heart/strengths.

Just my $.02. You look like someone the Navy would like to have as an officer.

In most cases PQ for officer you will be ok for enlisted, I would say to jump to going enlisted, if you are not picked up this time reapply for what will give you the best shot, put SWO as first choice.

I appreciate the input guys.

My concern with reapplying is I'm not sure what I'd change in my kit. I could take the ASTB again, but I risk it dropping. Would changing my community preference itself be a change enough to reapply? And won't I have to wait 6 months?

Changing the preference would not be a significant change, but finishing another term of your graduate courses would.

No I was in grad school in 2011, Jan-Dec. I completed 3 semesters (27 credit hours) and decided not to return

Significant adult employment experience doesn't hurt your chances either. There are worse ways to "wait 6 months" than by continuing to earn a living.

You are correct sir. There are worse ways. I am lucky to be employed and I know that. But I work a dead-end job that I'm highly unhappy at. The idea of being here for another 6 months with only a slim chance of getting picked up makes me want to cringe a little.

And I still have the problem of not knowing what to do for a "significant change" to occur on my kit in order to reapply.

Thanks again for the advice and suggestions. I do appreciate them.

You still have a few options, and enlisting shouldn't be one of them. You think your dead end job makes you un-happy? Try being a non-designated airman on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier....or better yet, serving chow in the galley for hours on end. If you are un-happy with your current work situation, then try finding another job while you wait for OCS.

As far as your OCS application goes, there are always things your can do to improve your package (not kit). Re-write your personal letter, re-take the ASTB, review and improve your LORs, or volunteer in the community. The world is yours for the taking.

Whether your are flying an airplane or waiting for OCS PRO-REC/Final Select, sometimes it's better to sit on your hands and do nothing while the situation develops.

Sometimes "significant change" comes from outside forces beyond your control. "The Needs of the Navy" (you'll hear this phrase often…) change over time, sometimes dramatically.

Agree with everything ea6bflyr said…especially his recommended vectors on "ways to improve"…while you wait.

Chin up! I'm working a dead end job too (well, maybe not dead end, but certainly not one I enjoy) waiting for my Finsel. Just keep the ultimate goal in your sights and the going will get easier.
And you talk about how you don't know what to do to improve your package once you are not selected, but, correct me if I'm wrong, that hasn't happened yet. One step at a time! It may not even end up being a concern. Your credentials look better than mine at least as far as numbers are concerned and I got a pro-Y.
And I definitely agree with Renegade's and ea6bflyr's (not that my opinion on the matter carries any weight): you want to be an officer, then pursue that and don't enlist; you have time.
