All,
So, I have several months ahead of me before I report to Pensacola and apparently several more waiting for me once I get there. With that said, a retired officer at a wedding I was at over the weekend suggested that I maybe take some online courses and I certainly considered it. I don't have enough to pay for grad school, so he suggested doing some through the Naval War College or the Naval Postgraduate School, or try to get my JPME out of the way, despite being an Ensign. Does anyone know how to do this? I was looking at the Navy War College's website but couldn't find anything about doing the JPME online or any online classes or anything. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

The NWC JPME is offered to O-3 and higher in the sea services, O-4 and up for Army, Air Force. The other services' war college JPME programs have similar restrictions. When you do make your way up to O-3, the NWC JPME+masters grad program is a good deal for people who want to get both pieces of paper. Try looking under CDE (College of Distance Education) on the War College website for the details but I think this is gonna be the long and short of it.

TA might not be the only answer but, like Squorch said, it is a good start for you to look into. (Does your admin department have an educational services officer as a collateral duty?)

Hope that helps...

Tread carefully towards the NWC CD-ROM JPME I course. It effing sucks. I sent it back two months after I started. Doing an online masters program through a civilian institution. PM me if you're interested in details.

Or you can actually enjoy doing nothing and enjoy the down time. Things will get busy soon enough.

As others have said, you're in a bad place timing-wise for a Master's. You'll have to get one eventually, but any grad degree worth more than the paper it's printed on will take at least ten months to complete. And you don't want to start an online program now (you really don't want an online grad degree at all, really) just to have to stop once API starts.

If I were in your shoes, I'd enjoy the time off and take some flying lessons with my spare change. At least you'd be doing something fun.

As one of the older guys here, allow me to say this:
Never again in your career in the military will you have the opportunity to sit around doing pretty much nothing and getting paid for it.
You're in a town with a fairly low cost of living with a spectacular beach and a lot of spare time.
Enjoy it!!!
Once you start flying, you'll be studying and working to earn your wings. Once you get winged you go to the RAG, lots more studying. Then you get to the fleet; lots of studying and lots of time away from home.
Then you get to shore duty (6-8 years from now) and you finally get to catch your breath.

As others have said, you can't start JPME until your an O-3. Beside you need to learn how to be a Naval Officer before you start learning about the joint world.
If you really want to make some good use of your time, allow me to recommend:
1) Buy an aerodynics book and start learning your professions. I've seen a more folks get tripped up on aero than anything else.
2) Improve your handicap. Golf is a social activity enjoyed by many Naval Officers and some of the places you'll pull into have outstanding golf courses.
3) Get certified to dive. Some port calls offer some of the best diving in the world.
4) Volenteer for some type of organization and make a positive impact on your community.

Most importantly, have fun!!!!! You'll never have another opportunity to do pretty much nothing during your military carreer until you put in for terminal leave. Enjoy it.
