No, what's far more disturbing is the fact that a Master Chief cannot exercise some deckplate leadership, underway, without some asshole recording it and sending it to the world via the interwebs. A reality of the times I suppose, but in no way is this good for the Navy. Just my .02c

Because these days smart phones serve as not only people's phones, but also as their music repository, their reading library, their movie libraries to include porn, and their video game libraries. A $20 32GB micro SD goes a long way; two goes even further.

I've also seen people be able to access facebook while U/W. Slowly, but enough to say hi to family back home.

But to truly answer your question, they cameras and recording devices aren't allowed in any classified spaces. Are surface ships classified as open secret containers like submarines?

I was merely providing several reasons why Sailors would want to bring phones/tablets onto ships. I think that there's a better way to reconcile security of classified material with 21st century tech than a draconian ban. The current generation of sailors grew up putting their whole lives on social media... things we think are common sense to keep off the web are not so common anymore. This also goes for spouses, too...the 'can't wait to meet my husband in Rota tomorrow!' facebook posts have gotten port calls cancelled entirely and a lot of people in trouble.
