Master Chief Humor

One day, the Command Master Chief was invited to the Officer's Club with the base CO to eat lunch. When they entered the main dining room, they found the place was quite crowded. They did notice three Lieutenants sitting at a table with two empty chairs, so the Captain asked them if they could join them.

They promptly invited them to join them. They ordered lunch and joined them in conversation as they ate. At one point, the Master Chief mentioned that he had observed characteristics about many officers from which he could determine the sources of their commissioning.

The Lieutenants were eager to hear about this and asked if he could tell how each of them had been commissioned.

The Master Chief turned to the Lieutenant on his left and said he went through ROTC. The Lieutenant confirmed that was correct and asked how he had noted this. The Master Chief replied that the Lieutenant, through his conversation, seemed to have a strong academic background but limited military experience.

The Master Chief then told the Lieutenant on his right that he had gone through OCS with previous enlisted service. The Lieutenant confirmed that this was correct and also asked how he had determined this. The Master Chief said, again through his conversation, that the Lieutenant seemed to have a firm military background and a lot of common sense.

The Lieutenant across the table from the Master Chief asked if he had determined his source of commission. The Master Chief replied that the Lieutenant had graduated from the United States Naval Academy. The Lieutenant stated that was correct and asked if he had noticed his high level of intelligence, precise military bearing, or other superior qualities acquired at the United States Naval Academy. The Master Chief replied that it was none of these that led to his determination.

He had simply observed the Lieutenant's class ring while he was picking his nose.:sleep_125

They need the ring so they know how far they can shove the finger up the nose before they hit base knuckle.

So that's what the cold metal thing I feel when I pick my nose is? Man, I don't think I'll ever take it off again!!! Don't want to shove my finger too far up my nose... might poke myself in the brain if I do that.

They are jsut having fun taking a common joke to its limits. Teh academy produces great officers and not so great officers just like every other commisioning source. The Naval Academy is a great deal for lots of guys other paths are right for others. keep doing what youa re doing if that is what you want.

I'm a product of good old Canoe-U... I'm in agreement with Skid... It doesn't matter where you got your commision... it matters how well you do whatever job you pursue in the military. There have been great officers from all commisioning sources, and bad ones too... as well as everything in between.

The thing with graduating from USNA is not to get a big head about it like some people do. Keep in mind that regardless of how you got commisioned, you're still a 2nd Lt or Ensign.

Good luck w/ the USNA thing. If you've any questions about the academy ghost, feel free to PM me.

So are you all implying that someone who goes through NROTC or OCS or has prior enlisted service get that much more respect than someone else who went through the academy?

No, that is not what anyone implies. It was a rather old joke, in which, depending on who tells it, all three at one telling or another, were the butt of the joke. The message is you must have a sense of humor. You must. I was going to post another joke, but if you guys are not going to laugh at yourselves a bit, I guess I will not tell it.

I would disagree with some tenets in this post. In my almost 20 years of service I honestly can say I never encountered a "bad" officer. Hands down the best officer I ever served under was a UCONN graduate, English major, commissioned through OCS.

Back to the joke, I believe that I could always spot an Academy graduate in their first year or so aboard. They tended to be a bit more squared away, a bit more knowledgeable during that first year or so. After that, you would be hard pressed to see any difference based on commissioning source.

Strongly recommend USNA. It is a great experience, great education and while there are some draw backs esp if you are into drinking and partying every night, there are so many benefits to be found there.

Chief, I want to hear your joke. It's only a joke and people ned to relax. You have to have thick skin or else you are not going to make it. Marines get the butt of the joke a lot but it is all in fun. Get over it and get some balls. You should go to USNA if you want to and don't worry about what people say, do it for you and your country.

I was just dogging on the ring.:icon_smil

Hell, I live with 2 USNA grads, and I'm ROTC. Once you're commissioned its more of a source of ribbing than anything.

I'm also a Boat School Brown Noser...I had a fellow grad pick me out of the crowd in Times Square three weeks ago. How? "Nice ring. I have one just like it."

And the jokes on YOU Program....my nostrils are big enough, I can still get knuckle, class ring or no.:disguise_:D

One of the big differences in the Naval Academy and NROTC is our greater emphasis on swim training. We train from Plebe Summer, developing our swimming technique and eventually reaching the high point of a 40 minute continuous swim, designed to simulate a ship sinking.

So around here, the big joke is, "What's the difference between a Naval Academy grad and an NROTC grad? When the ship sinks, the NROTC grad drowns. The Naval Academy grad swims for forty minutes and THEN drowns.":)
