MASSIVE collection of potentially PII on www.spokeo.com

All,

I got an email the other day from a friend telling me about www.spokeo.com. Perhaps this is a well known website and I am just clueless but it is a massive collection of information about everyone. It is essentially a huge white pages that takes it a step further...they gather all sorts of third party information and put it together on a URL about you.

My page contained accurate information about former jobs, magazines I subscribe too, email addresses, accurate estimate of my hometown house's value and even that the home was owned by my mother. They even provide a section where a subscription allows you to view credit history (not sure how that works, it might only be for you).

They even put a google mapshot of your home!

Finally, you can do a reverse email search on your email and they tell you all the various networks you belong to. I was very concerned when I searched one of my email addresses and I found all of my FLICKR pictures were available.

You can delete your URL by following their instructions but social networking information you can only control by changing your privacy settings.

I might be making a bigger deal about this than I should, but I was a little concerned on how much information was compiled on me in one spot.

Well...At least I don't have to Google myself anymore. I suppose it is all open source stuff, but it's all in one place. It's the kind of thing you want gone before you deploy, for sure.

FWIW, mine is all kinds of jacked up when it comes to real information like credit, home ownership, and education.

I'm 0/7 or so on that site. It may be detailed if it hits you but it's by no means comprehensive.

Not an accurate source of info on you...they want you to pay to learn more, right?

They got a few things right, but the vast amount of the information they had on me was flat out wrong.

This site is no better than any number I've seen in the past, and got most info about me wrong (my name is the first hit on Google and I have had the same cell phone number for 15 years, and it got neither). I've seen far better, and there are plenty of paid search services that can get all sorts of info.

Bottom line: nothing to worry about here beyond the normal wise practices of being aware of what you share about yourself...

I only see this site as a type of phishing place. They might have a little info on you but will get all they want if you respond to them or buy the info. In other words, don’t help them by giving them what they are looking for.

Most of my information seemed like it was randomly pulled from a database. They didn't get a single one of my hobbies right.

"Subscribes to magazines." Wow. How do they get such personal information?
Yeah, mine says "Peruses internet porn". Uncanny.

Apparently, I don't exist, which is a good thing, I don't want to be on that site, seems like a way for someone to get you information about you that you dont want public.
