I know the Corps has pilot transition programs to other air frames. How difficult is it to transition from helos to jets after a few years of flying helos?

As a general rule I'd say: hard. I'm not too up to speed on it but I do know it's a process that requires a package submission (package :p ) and a board selection process. Not impossible but not an everyday thing either, that goes for any airframe change, not just jets to helos. When the Green Machine has you qual'd to fly a certain airframe there needs to be a really good reason to spend the time and money to switch.

1. THE DEPUTY COMMANDANT FOR AVIATION IS COMMITTED TO THE MARINE AVIATION TRANSITION/CONVERSION (T/C) PROGRAM. THIS MARADMIN SEEKS APPLICATIONS FROM THOSE MOTIVATED PROFESSIONALS-BOTH NAVAL AVIATORS (NA) AND NAVAL FLIGHT OFFICERS (NFO)-WHO DESIRE TO BROADEN AND CHALLENGE THEMSELVES BY TRAINING FOR A DIFFERENT AVIATION MOS. THESE SELECT INDIVIDUALS WILL FACILITATE THE INTERCHANGE OF PROFESSIONAL AND TACTICAL EXPERTISE WITHIN MARINE CORPS AVIATION, AS WELL AS ASSIST HQMC IN BALANCING NA AND NFO INVENTORIES IN PARTICULAR AIRCRAFT COMMUNITIES.

2. THE TRANSITION/CONVERSION SELECTION BOARD WILL MEET ON OR ABOUT 7DEC 06.

3. THE TRANSITION/CONVERSION PROGRAM (EXCEPT C-9 T/C) IS OFFERED TO
ACTIVE DUTY NAVAL AVIATORS (EXCEPT 7563 & 7564 MOS'S) WITH
REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN PARAGRAPH 11.A. CH-53E PILOTS WHO DESIRE
CONVERSION TO CH-53D, SHOULD CONTACT MMOA-2 (MONITOR) WITH REQUEST. 7562 MOS SHOULD UTILIZE REF B WHEN CONSIDERING TRANSITION TO THE MV-22.

4. C-9 T/C TRAINING IS OFFERED TO ALL ACTIVE DUTY NA CAPTAINS OR
MAJORS WITH REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN PARAGRAPH 11.B.

5. THE TRANSITION PROGRAM IS OFFERED TO ANY ACTIVE DUTY NFO WITH
REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN PARAGRAPH 11.C.

6. IAW REF A, NA'S/NFO'S WITH MOS'S TARGETED UNDER THE AVIATION
CONTINUATION PAY (ACP) PROGRAM ARE NOT NORMALLY ELIGIBLE TO APPLY
FOR T/C TRAINING. THIS REQUIREMENT IS WAIVED. THOSE ON/ELIGIBLE FOR
AN ACP BONUS WILL RETAIN ELIGIBILITY. IF APPLICABLE, CHANGING TO A
NEW ACP CATEGORY IS AUTHORIZED UPON COMPLETION OF TRAINING.

7. ALL OPENINGS REFLECT THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE AND WILL BE FILLED
ON A COMPETITIVE/BEST QUALIFIED/NEEDS OF THE MARINE CORPS BASIS.
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES:
A. NAVAL AVIATORS:
-RW/FW TRANSITION/CONVERSION TO C-9 (2)
-RW/FW TRANSITION TO MV-22 (3)
-RW TRANSITION TO STRIKE (1)
-RW TRANSITION TO KC-130J (1)
-RW CONVERSION TO UH-1N (3)
-RW CONVERSION TO CH-53D (6)

B. NFO TRANSITION TO SNA (2)

C. ONE ALTERNATE SELECTION WILL BE MADE PER CATEGORY.

8. APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE SOLICITED FROM INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY SELECTED FOR T/C TO AN ACTIVE MOS ON ANY PREVIOUS BOARD. THIS IS WAIVED FOR C-9 T/C.

9. IAW REF A, "TRANSITION" SELECTEES WILL INCUR A FOUR YEAR
ADDITIONAL SERVICE OBLIGATION TO COMMENCE ON THE DATE TRAINING IS
COMPLETED. IAW REF A, "CONVERSION" SELECTEES WILL INCUR A THREE
YEAR ADDITIONAL SERVICE OBLIGATION TO COMMENCE ON THE DATE TRAINING IS COMPLETED.

10. APPLICANTS WILL ONLY BE CONSIDERED FOR ONE CATEGORY AND SHOULD
STATE WHICH CATEGORY (FROM PARAGRAPH 5) THEY DESIRE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR.

11. ALL APPLICATIONS SHALL BE SUBMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH REF A
AND MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: CATEGORY DESIRED, SUMMARY OF FLIGHT TIME (TOT TIME, TOT TIME BY TMS), INSTRUMENT TIME, DESIGNATIONS HELD, CURRENT MCC, DATE FIRST COMMISSIONED, YCS AS OF 7 DEC 06, TIME ON STATION, CURRENT WORK PHONE AND E-MAIL ADDRESS, CERTIFIED COPY OF MOST RECENT FLT PHYSICAL (TO INCLUDE ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS AND ANY WAIVERS). APPLICANTS ARE REMINDED TO CONSIDER ALL CAREER IMPLICATIONS PRIOR TO APPLICATION SUBMISSION.

12. SPECIFIC SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
A. NA TRANSITION/CONVERSION APPLICANTS FOR MV-22, STRIKE, KC-130,
UH-1N OR CH-53D: MINIMUM TWO YEARS FLEET EXPERIENCE, MINIMUM OF 2
YEARS TIME ON STATION AND NO MORE THAN 10 YEARS COMMISSIONED SERVICE AS OF 7 DEC 06.

B. C-9 APPLICATIONS, A MINIMUM OF 1200 FLT HOURS, A STRONG
BACKGROUND IN INSTRUMENT FLYING, 2 YEARS TIME ON STATION AND BETWEEN 8 TO 17 YEARS COMMISSIONED SERVICE AS OF 7 DEC 06.

C. NFO APPLICATIONS, MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS TIME ON STATION AND NO MORE THAN 10 YEARS COMMISSIONED SERVICE AS OF 7 DEC 06. NFO'S APPLYING FOR TRANSITION MUST MEET ALL STUDENT NAVAL AVIATOR PHYSICAL STANDARDS. NFO'S APPLYING FOR TRANSITION MUST INSURE THAT A CURRENT (LESS THAN 365 DAYS) SNA FLIGHT PHYSICAL AND APPROPRIATE SNA WAIVERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE APPLICATION. NFO FLIGHT PHYSICAL SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION WILL NOT BE PRESENTED TO THE BOARD.

13. APPLICATIONS MAY BE SUBMITTED VIA PDF FILE TO THE POC LISTED
ABOVE. ANY DOCUMENTS REQUIRING SIGNATURE MUST BE SIGNED PRIOR TO
CONVERSION TO PDF. IF SENDING HARDCOPIES, USE OF COMMERCIAL CARRIES (FEDEX, UPS, DHL) IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. USE OF US POSTAL SERVICE MAY INCUR UNDUE DELAYS. APPLICATIONS SHALL BE FORWARDED, VIA THE CHAIN OF COMMAND TO:

RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED. APPLICATIONS AND ENDORSEMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY DC AVN (ASM-52) NLT COB 1 DEC 06. THE BOARD WILL NOT CONSIDER LATE APPLICATIONS. THE BOARD WILL NOT CONSIDER FAX

15. THE BOARD RESULTS, WHEN APPROVED BY DC AVN, WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE AVIATION OFFICER ASSIGNMENT SECTION (MMOA-2). SELECTION BOARD RESULTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED BY MCBUL (MARADMIN) AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE DATE AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE BOARD PROCEEDINGS. BOARD RESULTS WILL NOT BE PASSED BY PHONE UNTIL AFTER PUBLICATION OF THE MCBUL ANNOUNCING THE SELECTEES.

16. THIS BULLETIN IS NOT APPLICABLE TO THE MARINE CORPS RESERVE.

a lot more difficult than just getting jets in the first place, judging by that Maradmin.

Yeah--I've never seen more than 2 spots a year for transition, and sometimes there's a big fat zero.

Also, consider the fact that you'd be taking a year out of your career to re-train, just to start as a nugget all over again.

It's something nice to have in mind in case you are getting stir-crazy in your community, but definitely not something to plan on. "Yeah, I'll do a few years in helos, then switch to jets..."

I know of four from my timeframe/peer group-all Cobra guys, I dont know but I think a CAS backround helps a bit.
