It'd be a neat trick, especially since it needs a carbon free energy source to be worth while...if only we could get a nuclear reactor on a ship. We'd have this so done once we get over that hurdle!

Doesn't sound feasible, right now. And if it were, at a high premium of energy. We'd have to be sorely desperate for oil.

Producing a gallon of fuel synthetically would be a pretty big task, especially since they're still working on the molecular level. Could you imagine the amount of power and space that would be required to support daily flight ops?

In the 1940's the idea of submarines creating their own oxygen with electrolysis was science fiction. Not to mention having aircraft fly combat missions piloted by guys sitting in a truck thousands of miles away, and have those aircraft deliver lazer guided munitions with pinpoint accuracy.

You need to hit up some of the Mexican joints on SPID. Your hydrocarbon production will make you a believer.

And here I thought they were just gonna figure out a way to scoop up all the stuff we dump into it...

There was an article in the Meridian base paper that discussed making jet fuel with 50% bio-fuel (?), which could come from algae (among other sources). It could only be 50% because otherwise the tank seals wouldn't work properly.
