Looking for Dump Sheets

Does anyone have good dump sheets that worked well for them while at API. Please keep these to more current students. Thank you

I was told by a friend that took weather last week that drawing out the occluded front with all the changes in wind direction caused by the front covered about 8-10 questions on the weather exam. Also was told drawing out the high pressure airmass clockwise and low pressure airmass counter-clockwise helped with questions regarding gradient winds, coriolis effect, and surface friction.

WTF? We covered all that in API? Shows how much of that I use now. On a more serious note: if it's a learning objective, know it. Afterward, brain dump via beer uptake.

ANYTHING THAT GETS FOOTSTOMPED. On a sidenote, I used to set aside about 20 minutes during my studies and I would practice writing out the exact dump sheet I wanted for a particular exam.

For engines/systems I redrew each system diagram completely -- that helped a ton. It seems like a lot to remember at first, but it's really not too bad. God help me if I ever have to do that with a T-6 diagram.

Anything footstomped for starters, than go through the ELOs and highlight the ones you keep coming back to or don't understand. Any acronyms or shorthand techniques are also good. Another persons dump sheet is not necessarily going to help you, everyone learns differently and understands things differently.

This is the best thing to put down: RTFQ/RTFA. Stands for Read the F****** Question and Read the F****** Answer. Half the stuff people miss is because they don't do both...

How useful is a dump sheet in practice? I don't get why you would know a piece of information before the test and forget it during. As far as formulas, if you need to see one to manipulate it, why not write it down when you need it?

Am I missing something?

I'll take a stab and say that if you were a visual learner this is how it would benefit you. Me being a visual learner, when i saw the equations or the Thrust required or the Thrust excess in a graph form, I was able to comprehend it better.

You can use it to write out all of the mnemonics you have; i.e. vertically write each first letter "Can't take viagra when penis is already full" To the right of that, vertically write each letter of "Some stupid pilots steal seats RIOs would want."

Cloud Type Stratus
Turbulence Smooth
Visibility Poor
Winds Steady
Precipitation Steady
Icing Rime
Air Mass Warm
Front Warm

That's stratus. Cumulus is going to be the opposite of stratus, so fill it in. There's probably 5 questions on the WX test that you can answer with that. Ask around, particularly the classes ahead of you. There's probably some good ideas out there. Practicing dump sheets is a good way to learn, anyway. Worst comes to worst, practice drawing dinosaurs or Mohammed, or whatever. :icon_smil

For weather here's what I put down:

Low mass to the left of a high mass. Then gradient and surface winds around the two.
The "wishbone" front system. Wind directions at various points around the system. Just put what the book has.
A table of standard atmosphere in both units for each value.
a list of turbulence severities and time frames
a list of icing severities
acronym for t-storm hazards (HI-MELT)

The frontal diagram helped because I could just look at it real quick to determine wind shifts. Didn't even have to thing.
And, I had a few issues with the severities of icing vs turbulence (confusion).

Thats what helped me. Whipped the hell outta the exam with it.

I'll let ya know what I had for Aero I

Finally, see if you can get the Coastie gouge book that covers all the EO.

Here's what he was talking about. I hope I didn't upload too much here (it's 875kb) and if I'm wrong in adding this, spank me accordingly. Otherwise, this is a good thing to print out and take notes on. It follows the slides and has most of the obvious stuff included. I printed this and took notes in the blank spaces, and it helped me. Don't treat this as a replacement; it's just a supplement to a well-rounded study diet.

Hell, I was hoping he would get involved with is class and get it that way... fine, give it to him the easy way. :p

I've got no problem supplying the gouge if you want it... I think my e-mail is somewhere on my profile. Hell, my group even made up a guide based on the review from the instructor if you want that.
