Look at me!....any good books to read???

Hey,

What's up everyone, I need all of your input. I am looking for books I can read that have something to do with the war, armed forces, or stuff about flight. I am a reader and I don't have anything to read. I know about the commodor's(sp?) book list but I want feedback on books previously read. Also, I want to fly; so if anyone has any books about flying stories or anything else, that would be awesome. I just read a book called "The Art of Uncontrollable Flight", and I thought it was a cute little story but it was really short. I want to read books about the mind of an Iraqi(sp?), a solider's story, a wife's story... anything. Please everyone respond to this thread in-depth. Thanks.

Bogey's and Bandit's by Robert Gandt, non-fictional account of newly winged jet aviators training at Cecil Field...

Once An Eagle by Anton Myrer...this is probably the best book I have ever read...not about flying, but about the values that we should all possess in this business

Speed is Life, More is Better by John Scanlan...hilarious as well as dark and intriguing portrayal of a deployed Marine Hornet squadron..

"Yeager", by Chuck Yeager was one of the books recommeded to me by my OSO before I took the ASTB. An awesome read for anyone interested in aviation. If you go to a Barnes and Noble and check out the military section, you can get a better idea of what's out there. So many to choose from...

-also, seeing that you're PLC, you might like "One of Us" (forgot the author). It gives a great account of what to expect from USMC OCS, TBS, and beyond. Not so much aviation related, but very relevant to your plans.

"Airwarriors", by Douglas Waller. He follows the students through their training as naval aviators. He covers everything from API to the students very first landing aboard a carrier.

A good book on small unit leadership is "One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer" by Nathaniel Fick - his experiences in OIF. Also, "Platoon Leader: A memoir of Command in Combat" is good for leadership - it is about Vietnam.

If you want the perspective of the war and officers from a LCpl point of view, read "Generation Kill" by Evan Wright

"From Beirut to Jerusalem" Palestinian and Isreali conflict

"The Arab Mind" Self explanatory

"On Killing" The Psychological cost of Learning to Kill In War and Society by Lt. Col Dave Glassman (he just finished another book called, "On Combat")


"Black Aces High" by Robert Wilcox - story of F-14 squadron in the Balkans


One of my top five favorite books: "Wind, Sand, and Stars" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Best book ever on just the joy and experience of flight. Side note: the author pioneered the air mail routes in Africa and South America. He was shot down in WWII flying a P-38 for the Free French

It's by Jack Ruppert, and I agree it's good. However, One Bullet Away by Nathaniel Fick also describes OCS and TBS experiences and is a bit more entertaining. I'd read both. Ditto on Once an Eagle by Myrer. Long as hell, but quite a read.

One of the best books about a bad situation (and one of the best books I've read, period) is "The Root; US Marines in Beirut". It's out of print now, but you can find it used on amazon for fairly cheap. My dad procurred my copy and won't give it back, and he's not exactly a fan of the military.

Also, if you're looking for a good book on the current Iraq conflict, you might try "The March UP". It's a pretty good read.

Very, very, VERY good books on insurgency/unconventional warfare are "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" and "The Other Side of the Mountain". They provide accurately translated after-action reports from Soviet and Mujahadeen (sp?) commanders, respectively, during the Soviet debacle there. They're a little hard to find, but B & N or Borders might have them.
