Well it's official. The Navy is apparently going to let this formerly blind old man (now just old man) into flight school. I was informed on Dec 28 that my transfer to Aviation had been approved.

For those who are wondering, persistence pays off. Let me take you on a little stroll down memory lane: I saw the Blues for the first time when I was three, for my sixth birthday I got a ride in an airplane (that's all I wanted), and, after a visit to Annapolis at the age of eleven, I knew that I wanted to be a Naval Aviator (note: this was pre-Top Gun. Yes, I was 11 before 1986). At the age of 17, I had an appointment to the Academy and a couple ROTC offers. Unfortunately, my eyes were not on the same program, and I was told that I would never be able to fly.

Well, I took the extended program through college, making sure to check in with a recruiter every year or so to see if requirements/restictions had changed. After 8 years of being told no, I decided to take a scholarship with the Civil Engineer Corps (which, by the way, is the absolute best deal in the military--for non-pilot wannabees). I finished college, went through OCS, and was cruising along in my CEC career until a friend told me that the Navy was letting Aviators have PRK. By that time, however, I was also too old. But, by some miracle, I had the surgery, passed the physical, did well on the ASTB, got an age waiver, and got my CO's endorsement. The package went in on 15 Aug and I waited until last week.

I'll be almost 30 by the time I get to API (April or May), and almost 33 by the time I get to a Fleet Squadron. But life is defintely good.

Special thanks to all members who have given help and advice.

Well, well. it's been a very merry christmas it seems. Congaradulations Jeff, good luck in API and I'm already looking forward to meeting you, any word on when you class up BTW?

As for the old man's club, there are a lot of us as a matter of fact. One of my roomates was a pilot and 30 (Prior Navy) and I've met tons of SNA/SNFO's between 27-31. Hopefully I should be taking my first T-34 flights around my big 3-0 day this summer.

Congratulations! It does my heart especially good to hear about people getting the prk waivers being as how I'm waiting on one myself. Word from my recruiters was that my surgery documents were on Capt Grubb's desk awaiting approval (or rejection)along with 30 others. Wonder if we were in the same pile. Does that mean I'll be hearing soon?

Dave,
Thanks. It's good to know that we're not the only old guys around. I've been told that I'll start API no later than 17 May (I'm hoping for a month sooner).

Jared,
My waiver actually went through last summer. Since I am transferring into Aviation from another Navy community, my application process took a different route than yours will. I have heard that pretty much everyone who meets the PRK requirements is getting the waiver, although this does not mean that everyone who gets the waiver will be selected for Aviation. Good Luck.

Jeffrey,
You are not old, I am old, I will be 32 in about a month. I ran into the same situation as your. My eyes sight were good at the time I applied to go to Marine OCS. Like you, I always wanted to be a pilot. I want to give it another try now but afraid they would turn me down because of my age. Should I give it another try? Do you know anybody out there that in the same situation as I am in right now? is there any hope for an age waiver for guy like me? Any info would be appriciated.

Tsannk,
There is always hope but you have to start applying NOW! You never know but each day you ask yourself "Could I" is a day wasted. Regardless of what people tell you in person or in this forum, Go for it until all avenues have been exhausted. At least you can say you made a valiant attempt on your terms and not just on the advice of someone else. You can live with that I'm sure. Semper Fi, Frumby

Jeff,
No, I don't have any prior service, but I am in the Marine Corps for almost four years now.
Frumby, Sir
Thank you for your encouragement. I will give it one more try.

Tsannk,

If you have been in the Marine Corps for 4 years, that will definitely help. Current waiver policy will give you credit (beyond the 27 year limit) for up to four years. You don't fit this requirement, but are at least somewhat close. I did not quite fit the requirement either, but was given the waiver. As Frumby said, go ahead and try. If you want more information about the route I took to get the waiver, send me an email. Good Luck

I thought I was in the "old man's club" at 27. I am just getting going on this now (I turn 28 in Sept) and this forum is really encouraging. Congrats!

27? You just a baby!

Anything else going for you? Married? Kids? Drive a minivan?

If not, I'm not sure we can let you in the club, although the fact that you need an age waiver will definitely help your cause.

Alright, here's my "old man" application:

Age: 27.5
Marital Status: Divorced after 5 years
Kids: No
Minivan: Yes (It's a company car, my own is an Acura Integra)
Work Uniform: Business suit

Am I in? Am I in?
