OCS Legacy AOCS and Pensacola OCS Drill Rifles

@mad dog and I were discussing drill rifles used in Pensacola for AOCS and later OCS - and I thought the drill weapons were deactivated M1 Garand type - and Mad Dog believed the drill weapons were bolt action and therefore likely M1903 Springfield rifles.

Can anyone comment or share a memory?

I tossed Mad Dog my 1943 CMP M1 in hopes it would evoke rifle run memories - but his memory does not correlate to having a semi auto M1.

As of last class in Pcola in 2007, Garands.

Share a memory, bad one: coming back from class back to our DI bouncing the rifle buttstock on the deck because somebody left their fucking locker unsecured. Much fun was had by all.

I graduated just before @mad dog and we carried M1 Garands. I’m surprised he doesn’t recall the “rifle run,” I think that’s where we lost the most people in our class…tell him I’m reporting him to MGySgt Bearup!

My understanding was that CNET universally issued demilled M1s across ROTC and OCS over the last 70+ years. At least as of the 90's, the USNA also had M1s.

I can't prove it, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the demilled M1s across the various commissioning sources were Navy 308s. I think my dad's sub had 308 Garands and I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually got repurposed for other uses.

Does anyone know where the Navy got their demilled M1s? Did they come from Anniston or from a Navy source? I'm sure someone on the CMP forums has that answer.

at Boston University NROTC, upon separating from the cross town enrollment with MIT NROTC, and establishing our own unit in Fall of 1983, we received crates of de-mil M1 Garands as part of the unit “standing up”. It was pretty cool. Our AMOI got us busy cleaning and refinishing the wood furniture.

Class 12-89, we had M-1s. They weren't referred to as Garands, they were "U.S. Caliber .30 M-1 Rifle"

I know becuase I happened to find my AOCS gouge notebook in a box of old stuff. 😊

I just wish I could find the serial number that I had to memorize, I'm fairly certain it was a Springfield Armory rifle

I meant to add...my dad had a M1 in 1966 at OCS. So I'd say Mad Dog may need another demerit for his memory.

I should add that in the picture @ChuckMK23 posted the aluminum guidon staff has me freaked out. I never saw one…looks terrible…like a “staff of shame.”

That's becuase it was it was also used to skim the pool
