I tried searching but I didn't come up with much at all. Also, if this is in the wrong forum, I apologize.

What's the deal with leave during flight school? Are there designated periods for people to take leave, or do SNA/SNFOs have days burning holes in their pockets? Also, are weekends generally free?

Weekends are generally but not always free. When you are in trainning dont expect leave outside of Christmas. There are always exceptions but "I have some days buring a hole in my pocket" wont be smiled upon.

There will probably be oportunities between training stages ie. between intermediate and advanced.
 
If you finish a flight block early you can take leave before you start the next segment of ground school. A few of my classmates have done that but it doesn't happen very early and makes planning difficult. Leave can also be taken over weekends, but make sure your plans are flexible because the Navy may need you to be flying when you were planning on a trip. Bottom line, you get leave over Thanksgiving and Christmas...but that's pretty much all that's it.

Actually leave can be taken when you are in a training pool before classing up as well.

That is not so true for SNAs. As soon as you finish a stage, you can expect the next stage to start very quickly and you will get some of the random flights in the mean time (night contacts and visual navs).

Once I started flying in primary, I had less than 5 weekdays that I wasn't scheduled and I flew or simed on at least a quarter of the weekends. If you have something going on during the weekend though(i.e. parents coming into town), you can submit a request to not be scheduled.

Don't plan on being able to take an "fly days" off. This means Mon-Fri your ass is theirs. If you want to leave town for a weekend, plan leaving after last military obligation on Friday and back by Sunday night. Just the way it is.
 
If you have something legitimate come up, they'll work with you on it (after heeing and hawing for a few minutes).

Well, it's not really a 96, then.

It's pretty simple. Expect to get, at most, weekends off, except when they need you to fly. If you get more than just the federal holidays, it's gravy.

That's the way it ALWAYS is around this profession. What's funny is that when you're "they" it always seems more appropriate to hee and haw than you did as the heehaw-ee.
