So I guess having someone like John Glenn as a role model in our Corps would be a bad idea to some traditionalists....He wanted to fly more than anything in his life, and ended up being a great officer and American. You don't hear much about him, because he is of a different mold, but yet, he did a lot for our Corps today. A well rounded officer sees things from every angle so as to better serve his Marines. Thinking one dimensionally only gets Marines killed.

Hey, I'll be the 1st to admit, I joined because the Blues look better than the other services' dress uniforms. I swear.
Well, that and Full Metal Jacket.

Of course, the blues and FMJ, no arguments there.

In addition to what mayday said... not only can few (thats hardly any) people say they joined for "only altruistic reasons" but the Corps has the same problem... thats why theyre the only branch to offer contracts in the first place, its a shameless/shamefull (whichever is correct) ploy to get people to join, marketing ploy if you will. Sure i took my contract, hell ya i took it and im glad to be part of something greater than myself, but that doesnt mean i wouldnt take what was offered to me because i felt leading was more important than flying... does that even make sense, i dont know, im tired.

lastly, with a FAC tour (skid kid, or anybody i guess) is one platform better suited than another, helos, vs, jets?

Ladies and Gentleman, the reason you joined is immaterial, the reason you continue is what counts. What you do in training is attempt to learn... the fleet is where you do learn. If you are lucky to find a senior SNCO and listen to them you will find that they can teach you more about the reality of the job then all the training films, lectures, seminars etc. ever did. It's what's inside the person that counts. I would much rather have a dedicated Marine than a so-called "educated" Marine.
