Last min ASTB question

Hi I take the test for the second time on Wednesday and I have a few last min questions. How do you solve that a=3b and 6b=12c a=? I have seent the answers to these questions but I don't see how they were solved. Also how do you find out how many gallons of water a 2'by2'by2' tub can hold. I know how to find area and all that but I don't know where to go from there. I think I didn't do the best on the test the first time around because I overthink everything. I also really suck at math and am trying to brush up on it so any help is appreciated. Thanks

1) I hate algebra.

2) 2x2x2=8 cubic feet of volume. Water has a weight of 62.5 pounds per cubic foot. One gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds. (similarly, the standard weight for Av gas is 6lbs/gallon, remember that)
8ft^3 * 62.5lbs / ft^3 = 500 pounds of water.
500 pounds / 8.33 pounds/gal = ~60 gallons of water.
 
If you are taking the test for the second time, those particular questions won't be on there, just to warn you.

For the algebra problem, it's a matter of substitution: a = 3b and 6b = 12c. So divide the second equation by 2 on both sides, 3b = 6c. since a = 3b, and 3b = 6c, a=6c.

not necessarily. i had to take the test a 2nd time b/c pensacola lost my 1st one. My class advisor told me there were 3 different tests and I had a 1 in 3 chance of getting the exact same one... although i didn't.

I'm not sure about that.. As I understand it, there are three versions and you only get one shot at each version. After that, you're done with the ASTB and your most recent score will be the one that counts.
 
don't take this the wrong way, but you may want to hold off on taking the ASTB and review some basic algebra / geometry / math first. If you don't know how to do those problems, you will not do well.
 
Ditto to MIDNJAC and HighDimension:
You can only take the ASTB three times in your life, once for each form 3, 4, and 5. WannaGoFast's situation was unusual since NOMI lost the test...but normally, if you just want to retake, you have to take a different form.

And you should definitely review those old math books, or maybe don't make the problems seem so difficult, because they are really quite simple.
 
To add to my previous, just go to Barnes & Noble / Borders / etc, get a big cup of coffee and raid their SAT/math review stuff. Even if you aren't a "math person" you can learn this stuff. To put things in perspective, I went from not "being a math person" in high school, to being a senior in mechanical engineering (w/ a respectable GPA), and I'm not a genius or anything close. Basically, if I can fake it for college, you can fake it for the ASTB :) Good luck, and like WishIcouldFly said, don't make it too hard. Many of the problems (especially the more wordy ones) sound much more difficult at first than they are. For example, here is one that I had:

"A quarterback is 20 yards from the reciever who is running at 15 ft/sec. How fast (in ft/sec) must the QB throw the football to reach the reciever in 1 second?"...at first I tried to write down some simple equation, and being pressed for time I wasn't thinking clearly. But then it hit me how simple it was......obviously 20 yds is 60 ft and if the ball is flying for one second, the reciever will cover 15 feet. So 60 + 15 = 75 ft/ 1 second or 75 ft/s. See what I mean? You just have to realize that there is an easy way to do each of these problems, so basically dumb down the problem and your solution and you should do ok! Hope that helps!
 
A little note...If you retake the same version again, it counts against you as one of your tries and the score gets dropped. I.e. if you take test 1 twice, your second time gets dropped, so you only have one score and now you only have one shot left.

Believe it or not I have been studying up on math like crazy. I just have to calm down and see the connection. I really think I over think everything. I am in a money bind and I'm trying to get into BDCP so it's really now or never for me, thanks for your and everyone else's concern.

yea I know that it won't be there but I heard that this type of problem is on every type.
