LaRue Tactical IronDot

Airborne All the Way!!!
Ok, my carbine from Spike's will ship out at the end of next week, and I've been thinking about optics for it. I have a Bushnell Zoom Dot on my Ruger 10/22 that I use for coon hunting, but since I ordered the rifle with the removable carrying handle/iron sight that would leave me without a BUIS.

So, I got to searching and came across the LaRue Tactical IronDot which is a combination red dot & BUIS. Does anyone have any experience with this sight and is it worth the $400 they're asking for it?

Thanks!

Personally, i would find a scope (or red dot) to my liking, and then purchase one of THESE as a backup. This is exactly what I had on my M4 overseas, and though I never had to use it in combat, I qualified using both the flip up rear sight, and the red dot.

I'm sure you can find a flip up you prefer that costs less and does the same thing, but that's just my $.02

concur. If I were you I'd seriously consider an Aimpoint T1 or maybe an H1. You can get an H1 for close to what that irondot costs. You could also consider any number of other Aimpoint models or EoTech's for the same kind of money (or less) than the T1/H1. Very very hard to beat that T1 (or H1). You'll need a lower 1/3rd co-witness mount (mines from Larue) too so that will add dollars. Good news you can will an Aimpoint to your kid and there is a good chance it will still have the original battery in it.

What's your opinion on this Aimpoint product: Aimpoint CompML2?

The reason I ask is a guy near me has one for sale on craigslist. He wants too much for it, but I e-mailed him the same link and I asked him if he would take considerably less than what he's asking.

Rocketman's dead-on with the Aimpoint T1/H1 recommendation. At a 3-gun match a few months ago, a homemade AR went down hard on me, and instead of shoot the rest of the match with pistol, I borrowed a buddy's backup SBR with the T1 mounted on it. I'm not sure if I would have normally done this, but I had shot the rifle before. It turned out to be an okay match, if not a great one.

I'm not familiar with the Larue deal, is that a Trijicon reflex sight inside the housing?

I have no personal experience with it but there must be something to it. Larue is usually spot on with their products. They must see something I don't which is why Mark Larue is rich and I'm not.

Here is some stuff on it http://www.militarymorons.com/weapons/ar.optics.html

With the advent of the T1/H1 plus the EoTech XPS line I really don't see the point unless you feel you just have to have a built in BUIS.

Ah, Burris... For some reason, they seem to have a bad rep around these parts, but a friend has one on an AK that abuses the ever-loving shit out of that sight, and it hasn't failed him yet.

I'm with you on the not-sure-about-the-built-in-iron thing, but I can see the merit of having a housing to bolster that type of sight and the reduced rail space. Like you, though, I think the Aimpoint/Eotech/Trijicon/Leupold product lines, plus the multitude of BUIS available work fine for me. Specifically, I use an EOTech with a Magpul rear BUIS (my primary AR has a standard front sight blade), irons co-witnessed.
