I'm flying back to Jax in the AM to pick up the car and start the drive out to San Diego. Its going to be a VFR direct gig to just get there. I don't plan on and side trips. Anyone know of any highway/roads I should avoid? (heavy construction/bad speed traps).

No navigation nightmare... I-10 direct Jax to Casa Grande AZ; I-8 direct to San Dogg! Highly recommend BarBQ joint in Ft. Stockton TX:tongue2_1 (only one in town)!

having done this about 40 times during my undergrad, I'd say the only bad parts would be Louisiana and Houston. Buc-ee's, Mikeska's BBQ in Columbus, TX, and In-N-Out in Tucson are all mando stops in my book. Have fun!
 
Louisiana's not bad. Never had a speeding ticket on I10 (usually going 90ish) and I did back and forth from Nola to Houston constantly during college. Agreed on the Buc-ee's. I'm sure google will tell you the same thing, but make sure you take I12 once crossing into Louisiana to avoid going south into Nola. It'll take you straight to Baton Rouge.
 
Mississippi is a shithole, and Louisiana isn't far behind, Texas is long as FUCK (on the 10) but it's a nice drive to do at night. I suggest the 10 to the 8. (Anyone who wants to respond with "you're from socal cuz you say "THE 8" and "THE 10", go fuck yourself).

Worst, most mindless drivers on the face of the earth however. I almost lost my mind driving from Meridian to Dallas on the first day of our move as about the 500th person that I passed sped up and paced me in my blind spot for 20+ miles (or passed me and then slowed down forcing me, in cruise control, to re-pass). Have had similar experiences every time I have driven in Louisianna, with the exception of I-59 which is basically MS anyway.

Aside from this leg, I didn't find the trip down I-20/I-10/I-8 to be too bad. Whole lot of nothing as I'm sure you are aware. Stopped in Dallas, Midland, El Paso, Tucson, and arrived at Miramar last night. Enjoy the 80 and 75 mph speed limits through most of W TX and NM/AZ. There is a lot of construction going on in AZ with reduced speed limits, and I found their police to be the most vigilant of any of the states we passed through, as well as having numerous camera/radar traps through most of the state (they are however clearly marked a half mile or so in advance). There are several border checkpoints you will have to pass through in western AZ and most of eastern CA. Not a big deal, but that can slow things down depending on the time of day. I don't really think you have too many other reasonable options going JAX to SD aside from I-10/I-8, but like I said, it wasn't bad.
 
Ace, I recommend you take TX in the daytime, especially the western half. The speed limit in the wide open parts of the state is 80 day / 65 night, so you have a +15mph benefit to doing it during the day.

Also, check your friggin' NMCI email once in a while, mm k?
 
My recommendation is to stop for gas anytime you're getting close to 1/4 tank. The further west you go, the further apart the gas stations get. Even in LA I remember going ~90 miles before seeing another gas station.

+10.....I learned this lesson the hard way during advanced after picking up an IP at the SD airport and heading back over the hill to Centro with a quarter tank of gas. I just figured that I would find somewhere on the way, but after getting slightly lost heading out of town, we were suddenly not around any gas stations any longer. Fuel light went on about as we were cresting the second pass, and luckily the guy I was driving had an iphone and a real chill demeanor. About 10 tense minutes later we coasted in on fumes into the parking lot of some random gas station a mile or so off the freeway, betting the farm that it was open and had gas. Worked out in the end, but it would have been a long hike back if it hadn't.

I went no lower than 1/2 tank on this most recent ccx before refilling.

Not really "lost" but missed our turn for I-8 and realized we were getting damn close to Mexico. At the time I wasn't real familiar with the SD area, so I'll blame it on that :)

More like I didn't realize how far behind us the exit for I-8 was. It should be said that the guy who was riding with me spent most of his career flying Hornets at Miramar, so if anyone should have known the right way.......well, maybe he was just testing me. Really we were just shooting the breeze and got distracted.......maybe that is a little easier for you to picture :)
