Kicking the habit.

WVUBetaHornet

Sweep the leg..
I've been around smokers my whole life (mother, father, friends, close family)...and the reality of the matter is that seeing all those images of emphysema, cancer, and death won't help you to quit, because once those images leave the screen, they're out of your mind in ten minutes and you feel the craving again..

I used to smoke way back when, quit cold turkey..the only method that I could ever see working for me...it doesn't cost any money, you don't have to take time out of your day to go to the store to pick up anything, and you use pure will power to overcome the habit. If you are to be/have been in the military, a strong sense of self-control that is something that is most certainly needed anyway.

On another note, if you've tried all the conventional methods, and still find that nothing is working for you...I've heard (as I'm sure you have as well) of hypnosis being an effective method for some. Smoking, overall, is a psychological addiction..and hypnosis is known to be a powerful deterrent if done correctly..

Wow, Thank you for all the help and support.
Awesome tips.
Tonight I'll finish the pack and then start on lozenges and a toothpick to have something in my hand. The rest is self-control.

Lets see how it plays-Harvey

"Tonight I'll finish the pack .... lets see how it plays ... "

"Finish the pack"?? FINISH THE PACK"??? BULLSHIT. I tore up half a carton and threw them away .... that's how I "started".

Here's another tip: You game plan is Bullshit. Complete Bullshit.

1. You smoke for a reason.

2. You will stop smoking for a reason.

When reason # 2 is more important to you than reason # 1 ... you'll quit. Not a second before ...

Signed: Yours truly .... a 3-4 pack/day Marlboro smoker for 10 years, who did it because he (I) liked it, who quit "cold" while on cruise with PLENTY of stress to mitigate AGAINST quitting ... who "hurt" for @ a week -- withdrawl??, who has not had a cigarette for 35 years, who HATES a cigarette "smoke-filled" room, and who enjoys a good, aromatic cigar on the "right" occasion .... and with the "right" company.

Lozenges, toothpicks, gum, smiley faces, 'self-control', 'support groups' ... while all nice, all are bullshit and none will help in the end.

To reiterate: the only way you will quit is when you WANT to quit -- more than you WANT to smoke.

:)

Find something else to occupy your time. Don't hang around smokers. Start running more. Chew toothpicks or gum. Don't tell yourself, "Ok after this pack I will quit." The only people I know that quit and stuck to it (including myself 4 years ago) have done it cold turkey. Good luck.

I used the patches the first time (you can see where this is going...) I quit and had some success, but ultimately I didn't have the will power to continue. I had quit for a couple months, then the 21 year old freshman + bars + everyone smoking in bars equation came into play. I've found that if you don't really really really want to quit, you won't; that was my problem (upon scrolling down I see myself saying exactly what A4s did).

Everyone I've talked to who hasn't turned back went cold turkey, and I've set a quit date for the fall in the same fashion.

P.S. Nicotine patches will cause you to have extremely vivid and sometimes lucid dreams, dreams which I can't even put into words, literally waking up in the morning and sitting in bed for ten minutes trying to figure out what happened. For me it was kind of fun, but I've heard others who have had adverse effects.

You know, if you really want to quit smoking but don't want to give up the nicotine, you could always switch to dip or chew.

Or you could just rotate through them. Dip one day, smoke another, snuff one day, chew another. Then pick one you really like and stick with it. Momma didn't raise no quitter.
