Keeping a dog and being in the Navy...

Thanks for all the perspective. He's around 2-3 years old, as best anyone can guess. Already house broken and since living with me for a few days, he hasn't gone to the bathroom inside or destroyed anything. I'm pretty much done with primary and I'm sure I can manage time for him.

I bought a dog right after I graduated because I figured I wouldn't be deploying for at least a couple years. This way, I could be there at least to raise it from a puppy to a young adult. This worked out pretty well, I fould some good vets and reasonably cheap kennels in Pcola for those occasional cross countries. Now that I'm in my fleet squadron, it hasn't been too rough because he's trained and housebroken, and I can trust him to stay at home while I put in 12+ hour work days. I recently sent him to live with my parents, who have about 8 acres, as I go through workups and then deployment.

Biggest thing I can recommend, based soley on my own experience, is if you are serious about getting a dog, get one as early as you can in flight school. Getting one right when you hit the FRS/fleet is probably not a good idea. Just my two bits.
