Congrats. My favorite part of the procedure was that I could actually smell the burned away cornea. Not pleasant!

ZOUNDS!!! Sounds unpleasant...is the surgery itself painful or are you knocked out for it?
What's the difference between PRK and PRK LASEK?

Wow, thanx for takin' the time to write all that and so quickly too. I just took my medical at MEPS last friday and passed it, I took the ASTB but I gotta retake it 'cuz of the bio...no prob w/ the aptitude part. I think my recruiter wants me to go NFO...more quota points maybe? If so he made a mistake inviting me on a trip to check out Lemoore NAS. I tried out the hornet sim and came out totally convinced that pilot was THE spot for me...took off flew around a bit and put her on the strip nice & soft and realized I wouldn't be happy sitting in the back seat letting somebody else fly. I found out from here that NFO-pilot re-treading is pretty hard so I'm researching PRK through my uncle who's an eye-doc...where'd U get yours done at? That's all for now but I know I'll have much more to ask later...Thanks again!

Kris

A few years agoo my Mom had her eyes done with an older technique and the docs were doing it one eye at a time. I think it was because for a couple days after the surgery the eye was pretty incapacitated and you wanted the other one functional.

My uncle's been an opthamologist at least 10 years so my whole family looks to him for advice concerning vision. He mainly worries about a freak accident w/ the machine and me loosing sight completely if I get both eyes done...and with my dad bein' my $ support in this my hands are kinda tied but I do WANT to get get this over with as soon as possible and will copy and paste your info as support. Thanx again!

I had one eye done at a time last March with PRK. The reason I choose to do it, was because I still needed to attend school, so I wanted one good eye while the other one healed. They were done a week apart, so by that time, my other eye that had the surgery was dependable. The Doc also said that by doing this, they could learn alot from the way the first eye reacted and could fine-tune the second eye. Although I'm sure I could have done both at once, I just felt I'd go with what the doc suggested. I didn't experience any weird headaches from this way, and the surgery didn't bother me at all, not even the dreaded bandage contacts. (Maybe this was due to the fact that I had no trouble wearing contacts)

Since my eyes were done seperately, it was hard for me to compare them because of the week between the surgeries, but I'm pretty sure they stabilized after about one and half months. But it all depends on the healing. You probably know this already, but as the cornea regrows it is cloudy and it's not until the cornea's fibers are fully aligned that the cloudiness goes away and the vision starts to become what it will be from then on out (I'm pretty sure this took me about 3 months to completely heal, that's when the doc said if he didn't know I had the surgery then he couldn't tell that I had had it). To give you and idea of how I healed. I could see great out of it the day after, then as the healing process began, my vision got worse and so on then it started coming back to 20/20.

I was worried about it too, but I just told myself that i was lucky to even have this opportunity to have the surgery and be considered for a pilot spot. If it didn't work out there was nothing else I could do and I was ok with that.
I'm not sure how to comfort you, only that if your eye plan was like mine, I could have gone back and had a "touch-up" if it didn't work the first time for free (life time guarantee). Other than that, just have to trust your doc. Sorry for such a long reply

Hehe, I know what U mean Micheal...I'll be doing the delayed centry thing 'cuz I won't be graduating 'til May 2003. But I've been doing the push-ups and running already...Frumby's definetely right, you, gotta have the attitude of bein' the best and not just try to get by the minimums...while at the same time not getting cocky and full of yourself.

I'm totally convinced that this what I should pursue and the thoughts as to what's to come are exciting and motivating. I'm glad to finally meet guys and gals goin' after the same thing I am and who have similar thoughts and high hopes about it. Good luck to y'all!

I will be having my eyes done one at a time as well. The first is scheduled for this Friday-- Since my glasses perscription is so mild (one eye is 20/70, the other is 20/40), I hope that 9 months later I have eyes like an eagle's too :) Glad things worked out for you Vicki.

Michael,

Thanks, I've already talked with a couple people on here by email and researched the waiver process on my own via the internet and calling a few of the higer ups at NOMI-- I'm also the same Bryan that sent you an email about prior flight experience. We also discussed the LASEK PRK and I've decided to go with regular PRK. I know, your procedure is probably superior medically and in terms of the odds of complications, but I decided to go with the traditional form of PRK.

Anyway, I guess that means that we'll be applying around the same time for OCS (darn 90 days...), so good luck man!

I just spoke with a recruiter from a district other than my home one and from what I hear there is a significant shortage of pilots. NFOs are also in demand right now.
