John,

I was sitting in a meeting here in PCola and was told some info about the future of the P-3 and what may replace it. Have you heard anything?

You mean, MMA? Let's see, the choices are:

Orion 2000 (a jazzy new P3, updated engines/avionics, same airframe)
737
and possibly the new British Nimrod (mark 2??)

I'll be retired by the time they field the replacement. I wouldn't hold my breath for anything new. The operative word is "may". There are posters up I have seen throughout training of the Orion 2000 and the Boeing 737.

My choice, the 737, give us a well proven, reliable airframe (comments Frumby?), and of course, Boeing will just be happy to throw in the bomb bay for internal weapons, my guess is that the wings wouldn't be all that great for carrying JDAMs/46s/Harpoons or anything...

Honestly, who knows, would love to see a decision made. But doubt it is a priority. And, what the heck does a WAAAAYYYYYY junior jg know anyways! (ok, no comment on that Frumby!)

And truth be told, the current P3 is a blast to fly, and I am damn happy to be where I am at!

What did they put out at the meeting, trying to scare off the guys wanting to go P3s, or entice them with the possibility of a new airframe???

John,

They just told us that with the extra workload put on the P-3's, that it has seriously cut into the service life of what was expected. Said something like 6-7 years off its expected life. They explained that the powers at be were discussing the cost of a complete overhaul of the P-3's and the years gained by doing so vs. buying 737's. Said that it looked good for the 737 and that if it happened everyone and his brother that wanted to fly for the airlines would be wanting to go P-3's. He said it didnt matter to him because he is a NFO and that stands for no F'ing opportunity. I must admit that he laughed when he made the last NFO comment. How's Hawaii?

That sounds about right, god knows I racked up enough hours last deployment we were flying so much. But the planes held together great, of course due to the hard work of our maintainers who made it possible for us to get the job done.

I can just imagine the mad scrambled to go to the new platform that would ensue if 737s started rolling off the assembly line, not only in Primary, but imagine all the guys in the Fleet that would want to transition over? You would still have P3s for awhile as you built up those new squadrons.

Anyways, Hawaii is great, no complaints here. You know, it is a rough duty location, but dang it, someone has to do it, and I volunteered!

So, where are you at now in training?

John,

I am in API. Strike that, I am waiting to start API. I was supposed to class up two weeks ago. However, the city of Gainesville sent a letter to the command requesting my presence for a 9-11 memorial. THey asked the CO if I could come back to G'ville because they were honoring those of us that went to NY and did the search and rescue thing. When I got to the little shin dig, I met Joe Galloway, he wrote "We were soilders once". What a cool guy. He was asking me all about what NY was like after 9-11. I showed him some pictures I took between 9-13 thru 16th. Now that I'm back in P'cola, Iget to start API on Friday. Finnnalllyyy! Then onto Corpus.

That is awesome. Do you have any of those pics available to put up online, I for one would like to see them, and I am sure others would also. If you can, email to me and I will put them up for you.

Glad to hear that you are starting API, best of luck and training!

John,

Yeah I can email them to you. I'll find a scanner on base and scan them in this week. I have some of the photos on disk and will try sending you some of those today.
