Looks like the Rooskies finally got a successful launch of their new ballistic missile. Apparently, if you dig a little, the 18 'successful' launches they claim were a bit exaggerated.

Doing a little research on the new Borei-class subs, it looks like they're trying to become a formidable submarine force again. I believe there are plans to make 8 of these things and I believe a couple are already operational. (According to the news)....

Sweet. We can stop deploying to desert shit holes and go back to Japan and the land of Viking Women to get some on top time.

While Russian military prowess has atrophied from halcyon days of the Soviet 'empire' they are complete schmucks when it comes to rockets and missiles, their claim probably isn't as far off the mark as you might think.

As for becoming a formidable submarine force again they are merely replacing the older boats they still have operating now at a slow but steady pace. It would be more of a maintenance of rather than an expansion of current capabilities with a few improvements thrown in. As one of the few things that they are decent at building and operating their sub force will get it's fair share of good funding especially since it is part of their nuclear force that is one of the last vestiges of their superpower status.

If you want new targets to track look a little further south and east, or west depending on where you are hanging out at the time.

I'm assuming that you meant "aren't complete schmucks"?

Russian/Soviet doctrine has always favored the big missiles (over bombers and other more western technology favorites), and anything that can be centrally controlled or that is autonomous. I wouldn't think that this has changed much since the wall came down.

Just read "A Time to Die", about KURSK's sinking and subsequent rescue debacle. Northern Fleet doesn't come off looking too hot. If they were that much of a clown show during the Soviet era, no wonder they were so big on secrecy.
