When if at all can pilots transfer to jets from other pipelines, and who is this routed through. I've heard its after the first sea tour, but not from anyone official.
 
After 1st sea tour.. MILPERSMAN 1542-020 governs it.

You apply to a board, and let your wishes be known. The board decides if you are a viable candidate. Then if a slot is open in one of your choices (you get 2) they offer it to you.

Be warned, once your front office knows you want to switch, don't expect much help otherwise with orders. You will be "dead" to your community, even if not selected.

I got picked up for E2C2 from HSL off the September board.
 
just for the sake of discussion, what things would the board look for in an applicant? What would be the advantage of accepting a transition?
 
Strong grades in flight school (yes, they apparently check)

Good NATOPS/Instrument Checks

QUALS (I had HAC, FCP, NVGI, LSO, ATO L4)

Good CO reccomendation helps.
 
Oh, and getting all the above as a JG helps.

They did not ask/see much about ground jobs. This is one of the FEW things post-RAG that will only care about your tactical and flying proficiency.
 
so this would sort of fall outside of the "Needs of the Navy" category then? (i.e a reward for above average performance)
 
The Navy has to have a need/want.

I was told that they would rather keep an aviator in another community, than have him leave, although I never made any comments about getting out.

The community manning in VRC/VAW in my year group was undermanned, so they had room to take me.

Keep in mind, if you are gunning for Admiral or CAG, this is probably going to kabosh that. If you want to keep on flying, and accept that you will likely be a terminal LCDR for it, by all means apply when the time is right.
 
Good friend of mine transitioned from VP to VAQ with a stop in the middle flying Nimrods with the RAF. Way pack + in his first VP tour and was offered two attractive offers and took the PEP. Was selected for transition and given VAQ as his only option as the Navy needed Prowler guys at the time (dating myself this is 88).

Showed up in our first fleet VAQ tour as an 0-4 select. Worked his ass off and did back to back sea tours in the community and is now a carrier CO.

So, you can pull it off and still have a career by all means but it's hard work.

I was told that if you are unable to get through you new sea tour before you screen for LCDR/DH you probably will not be offered it.

2. If you're a primary SNA as per your profile, concentrate on getting jets the first time around. The Navy and Marines have only a couple of slots for transitions per FY, and sometimes none, so don't hang your hat on it.

3. At the same time, if it's what you want, don't be afraid to persue it. Just remember, the best way to get it is to do well in whatever pipeline you do select. Don't be the bitter guy complaining that you want to do something else.
