As you may have seen in a recent thread, I just recently found out the Navy is not getting the F-22, but will be getting the F-35 instead. I was disappointed.

Also, from what I've gathered from several sketchy online readings, it sounds like the F-15 probably beats the F-18 overall as a fighter.

What is going on here? Why isn't the Navy trying to be #1?

Also, if anybody knows of a reliable publishing about the "top" fighters (debatable from what I understand) could you post it here? I haven't been able to find squat.

Oh boy, there is too much ignorance in that post to cover at once. I don't mean that as a slight.

The Navy has a completely different mission than the Air Force. Naval Aviation has to worry about issues the Air Force would never even begin to think about. This isn't a "Navy is better than Air Force" argument, it's pure simple fact. For tactical aircraft, the biggest issue is landing on an aircraft carrier. This exerts tremendous loads on an aircraft, so much so that it requires a different design philosophy. To see what I mean, next time you see an F-15 or F-16, look at the landing gear. Then go over to an F/A-18 and look at the landing gears. That's just a small facet of it. Navy tactical aircraft are not designed the same way an Air Force tactical aircraft is.

The F-15C is a dedicated fighter. That's all it was built to do, and that is all it does. The F-15E Strike Eagle is closer to the Hornet than a F-15C. The Hornet is a jack-of-all trades. The general design principle is that the Hornet was meant to fight its way into enemy airspace, unescorted, drop its bombs, and fight its way back to the carrier. It's called Self-Escort Strike. As for going toe-to-toe with each other, that's another discussion beyond the scope of this thread. Put it this way, there are things in the air-to-air arena that the Hornet is incredible at, and there are things that it is so-so at. Same for the F-15. Same for ANY fighter aircraft. Each fighter has its own "realm" or "envelope" that it is designed to fight in.

The F-22 is an Air Force project from day 1. It is purely an Air Supremecy fighter. The Navy doesn't need Air Supremecy fighters. That's not our mission.

Nobody is stopping you from joining the air farce

I don't know any Hornets that can't land on the ground, but I have yet to see an F-15 land or take off from a carrier.
