Irregular Heartbeat?

Is this a disqualifying factor for aviator candidates? I can't see why it would be. Everybody in the med community says "lot of people with irregular heartbeats lead regular lives." Thanks in advance for any help.

When I was getting both the dodmerb, and an aviation physical, when they put me on the EKG I had an "irregular heart beat." The Technicians were great and had me retest (for the aviation physical 3 times) until he finally told me to hold my breath. Turned out on both occasions my heart rate was being disrupted by the rhythm of my breathing so the trick was to hold my breath and everything worked out fine.

I had the same thing happen to me during my flight physical. The guys who were testing me just told me to relax and the "irregular heartbeat" was from the rhythm of my breathing. Don't quote me, but a waiver for a diagnosed irregular heartbeat isn't out of the picture.

Brett is right about the description and the advice.

I know of several folks who fly with irregular heartbeats. The reason why your heart is/may be irregular is key to you obtaining a waiver or not.

My dad worked in admissions at the academy and was on the aviation board. I spoke with him, but all the same this is second hand information so take it for what it is worth. Irregular heart beats and heart palpitations are a very serious issue with the navy. I actually have a friend that is restricted line becuase of it. From what he told me the big issue is if there are problems with the heart itself. If you can prove that the irregular heart beats are not caused by a problem with your heart you may be okay. Alot of people just don't go through the hassle of proving this beyond all doubt. Irregular beats or palpitations was a disqualifier for the academy, but as he told me there are cases where someone proves that it is not caused by anything far more serious like holes in the heart (which is the navy's primary concern). Once again these are my father's words through my mouth so take it for what it is worth.

It also depends on the severity. Those machines they use are out of convenience. When I had my EKG done, it came back with all sorts of noise and crap on it. I had a second done, it came back w/ irregular and another thing. The doc looked at it and just signed off that it was OK. Just because you're small fractions of a second off... and I mean small doesn't pose a problem. If you are skipping whole beats... that is where you will run into trouble.

I think you said it all right there. Regardless, good luck.

i too was first diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, but when I was retested, the new doc said that my first reading was done on a poorly calibrated machine and the previous doc misanalyzed it. My heart's still intact.

^Same here... on my DODMERB and my commissioning physical... Poorly calibrated machine (commissioning physical).... and a newbie AF doc coupled with a really loud noise midway through the test on my DODMERB...
