Interservice transfers?

I had no idea where to post this, but here it is.

So I found the SECNAVINST 1000.7, which deals with officer interservice transfers, but I can't quite decipher the language. Just exactly when can an aviator transfer to another service? I'd appreciate an answer from someone who actually knows, but random guesses are okay too!

That was a little more straightforward, thanks.

It would appear that one would have to fulfill the entire aviation service obligation before transferring to another service (in other words, they don't want you to finish your obligation in a different service than where you originally started).

I'm not sure if they are going to be offering it again or not, but last year the Marines needed pilots and the Navy had to many. Because of this, the obligated service requirment was waived and those who wanted to switch from Navy to Marine were allowed to do so.

This was just for people in the training pipeline. Do not expect to have an opportunity like that in the future. That being said, it is also a viable option for S-3 guys during the sundown.

Yeah, I was in training when they offered the Marine transition. I thought about it for maybe five minutes before I nixed that idea. If I had wanted to be a Marine I would have done it long ago.

I was actually looking into an Army or Guard transfer once I'm done with my first squadron tour here, but it looks like it would be pretty difficult administratively.

McNamara,

If you find anything out, please post it. I'm interested in a transfer to the Marines myself. Thanks

One of my friends did the Marine transfer (he's in helo advanced right now). I'll see what I can find out, as I imagine transferring in flight school would be easier than later in the fleet. That's assuming the Marine transfer option is still going on.
