Hey guys.
I just finished my first practice ATSB from the ARCO book. I did extremely well in math/vocab and spatial, and was ok with aviation and poor in mechanics. I would prefer to not post my scores here lest I suffer great embarassment at your hands :) but I know many of you took the practice tests and the real thing and you know how they grade. If you would be willing to help me interpret my scores(I intend to work mainly on mechanical for the next few weeks) please leave a post so I can email you with the info.

Oh, and boy was that BI section weird-had me REALLY wondering how the heck they score that. Thanks!

I would say don't really depend on the Arco book helping you that much at all except for the spatial part. The mechanical comp is very different than the real test. I know that Arco book backward and forward, and it didn't help me very much except for the spatial part. Your best bet to do really well on the ASTB is to get the Marine Study Guide, you can find it on the web site. Also get an ACT or GRE book and study the Geometry parts, there is lots of Geometry on the actual test. Know the equation for the area of a equal lateral triangle, because there is a question like that on the test. The exact same question is on the Marine study guide. By the way the, so you don't have to look it up. The Area of an equal lateral triangle is side squared times the square root of 3 divided by four. That is about the only question I can remember from the actual test. Also some of variation word problems in the Arco book will help you. Know how to do variation and inverse variation word problems because I think there are some of those on the test also. If you study what I told you, you should do fine on the test. I studied just the Arco book the first time I took it and I didn't do very well on the test. The next time I took it I studied what I told you and I did very well. I hope I helped and Good Luck on the test.

I'd have to agree with kent on this one. you'll have to go back and study some of that trig and geometry you learned in highschool. most of the stuff on the test isnt very hard, but you can t waste time trying to figure crap out. i do think the arcos prepare yoiu well for the mechanical comprehension though. be sure to also grab the arco tests for regular officers because theres even more word problems and mechanical problems in there. as for the BI section, my only advice is to tell the truth, meaning do try to outsmart the test. if they ask, do you every drive recklossly, the right answer is probably yes.
