I am looking for where it is written on how Navy Officers are allowed to have outside jobs, my CO is not allowing the Officers to work a certain job for a certain All-Star game that is coming up and I have heard and know that you can have jobs outside the Navy, but there is like chit or something has to be approved. The CO wont allow it unless he sees something in writing.....Help Please:confused:

There is no hard written instruction that I know of...you simply would not want to do anything that would affect your flight grades or bring discredit upon the naval service...unfortunately that interpertation is left wide open.

I worked at the Flora-Bama as a barback, oyster shucker and bartender while stashed and in VT-10 and VT-86. My grades were good so it was never a problem.

If the CO says no, then no it is... As a student, I wouldn't push the issue.

Curious what this "certain job" is? And did it require them to wear a uniform? There are rules regarding where and when you can wear your uniform.

What kind of command is it?

If your CO is against it for whatever reason, then you're right not to push it. If, on the other hand, he's just making you go through the paperwork drill, he may be doing it as part of a valuable training opportunity for you. In the fleet, just about anything that your troops do that is out of the ordinary generally requires them to run a "Special Request Chit" thought the chain of command. These will oftentimes require the inclusion of some kind of reference to an instruction that details the hows and whys of who can authorize different things - your CO may have this in mind. In this case, look through the MILPERSMAN to see what it has to say about civilian employment. Just be careful about appearing to be a "sea lawyer" if your CO is truly against this though - "But Skipper, it says right here that I can do it, so what's the problem..." Catch my drift? Good luck.

This is at a NROTC unit and I am a new Ensign. The job is security at the upcoming All-Star game in our city (Houston). It is not only me that wants to do the job, but also some of the LTs here too, but when I asked to be put on the list, the LT said that the CO wasnt sure as Naval Officers we are allowed to do this and if there is an instruction it would help our case out. The CO isnt against it because it is better for the command here if we can support the city more, he just isnt too sure if Naval Officers can do it (even though the MIDNS/OC are free to do it)

Oh, just to add, the security people actually called the command and asked for us, so...

What a weird reaction. We (as both students and active duty officers) would work security at football games all the time in ROTC, just not in uniform. The problem you might run into is "Air Force" syndrome. There might not be anything that says you can't do it, so it will be hard to prove that you can.

Yes, I think that is the problem, there isnt any where that says you can, but there is no where that says you cant, and I am sure that he knows people have outside jobs. The search goes on....

In that case, I'd contact your local JAG to see if they can provide any guidance. I can understand your front office's hesitation, but it's not like you're being deputized as LE, just private security.

And in the end, it's barely even that. I think everyone knows that's pretty much a good deal that the event sponsors are giving service members and in return, they get free bodies to tell people not to stand in the handicap aisle.
