OK, now if I'm going to flight school after OCS, then where is an ideal/relatively close place to live in p-cola? What areas of the city will I be going to for training (N, S, E, W etc. or towns like Warrington, Beach Haven etc)? What pipelines are actually trained in p-cola and the surrounding area? Thanks.

you are most likely going to do part of your school at pensacola nas and the part at whiting. you might try and pick somewhere in between. They are about 45 minutes to an hour apart. I live in a very nice apartment complex called Governor's Gate. It's the nicest apartments in P'cola. The rent starts in the 700's. There are quite a few officers in the community many or which are flight students. you might check it out.

What town are those apartments located in? Where, exactly is Whiting? I'm not too clear on my p-cola geography yet. Is the rent you listed for 1, 2, or 3 beds? What about buying a house and doing a little work (to improve value so you can resell quickly if needed) and just getting some roomies? I just don't like go give my money away...at least by owning I can get some depreciation, deductable interest, appreciation and so on...ah, the loopholes of the wealthy =)

What I'd really like to do is to buy my own Apt. building and just have a unit for myself =) Maybe someday...nothing wrong with thinking big...

BTW, thanks for the replies.

so how about for us nfo types who are likely to stay in pensacola the whole time... what's the fatty way to live there? i'd like a healthy balance between cheapness, proximity to base and the beach, and social atmosphere. megan, you think austinwood is good to go for all that?

show me your WAARRRR face!

I just moved into a place last week that is close to Governors Gate, but a house instead. Whiting is just north of Milton as you look on your map, and NAS Pensacola is just south of Warrington. The NFO’s have it made for living, I drove down with one, and he moved into a place in Perdido Key. They found a two bedroom apartment for around $700 – all they have to do is cross the street and they are on the beach. Perdido Key is pretty damn close to the back gate.

I chose to live by the intersection of nine mile and university so that it will be about 25-30 min drive to both Whiting and Pensacola. I pay $325 for rent, $25 for storage, whatever utilities are, and then BAH is around $640 or so. My college roommates both chose to live in Gulf Breeze so that they could be close to Pensacola Beech. Once they start making the drive to Whiting for a 5am flight, they are going to hate life. There are a lot of things to balance in choosing the location because of how spread out things are. It really pissed me off because I had my mind set on living on the beach, but training comes before play.

As far as buying a house, the VA loan is something you will want to do some research on – it’s a good deal. There are some that buy a house everywhere they go, and then rent em out when they leave. I don’t want to worry about the dishwasher breaking down, or getting gas for the lawn mower while I am busting my arse in hopes of a jet slot. First things first, perhaps as on O-2 I’ll get into the whole real-estate thing.

For NFOs Austin Wood is the best/most convenient place to live. Apts are nice and it is close to the base, exchange complex, and you can watch the Blue Angels practice from your balcony.

I just moved into a complex called Stoddart Place off of Blue angel, right out the back gate. Ah, it's ok, but I'm only gonna be here for another 6 or so weeks since I class up next week then move onto CC. If you get a couple of roomies together, I think getting a house would be the better deal. We looked at several before deciding on a apt. Get the Apartment guide (if Apts is what you want) if you want me to mail ya a copy, let me know. It's pretty handy.

Hey E5B, I'm at Crystal Lake out on 98. I drive by your place to go to Walmart.

Just so you guys know...If you call up the fleet and family support center on base in pcola, they will send you a welcome aboard package that includes apartment guides and information about the local area. It isn't that great but at least it will give you a start on your hunt.

DONT LIVE AT AUSTINWOOD. Sorry for you all that liked the place..i just have many horror stories. Read my post on Best place to live in pcola for the details. The blue angels practicing was awesome at first then got old real fast when my windows almost cave in at 8 in the morning almost every week.

you fellas going to whiting can shoot me an email. I bought a 3 bedroom house, 2 car garage and I've got a room available. Two of my good buddies will be in it for another 7 months or so for helo training at whiting...but I still have another room to fill. You guys going for primary training could really get some good help by rooming with someone who just completed primary. The house is in Milton...15 min from base. Trust me, it's nice to be close to base when you get to primary. $350/month + utilities.

Sounds like a rental ad to me. Plus, 3 guys in a house paying $350/month each and utilities sounds like you're overcharging. Are you sure you're not a landlord??? I plan on buying my own little fixer and selling for a profit when I leave, but thanks for the offer =)
