In California, they would might avoid prosecution but no doubt would be sued.
As much shit as people give texans for being dumb, or rednecks, or both, I am impressed with most of them. They're genuinely nice people (I haven't been to downtown Corpus yet, so don't ruin it for me) and I haven't met the same resistance to military boys as I ran into in P Cola or the Nid. This article just further reinforces that I'd rather be surrounded by a bunch of Texans than almost anyone else.
No problem here in Florida. My understanding they wouldn't be charged nor could they be sued (could be wrong on that part though). In California, they would might avoid prosecution but no doubt would be sued.
That pretty much sums up FL's law, as I understand it. I'm not really up on the specifics for CA. I've read a law summmary once since moving here, and I don't think you are required to "retreat" in your own home, but I'm not positive. The problem is the civil suit that could result from a personal defense situation, even if the DA or whatever determines you acted in self defense. It just depends on your state, unfortunately.
