I can't help but laugh.

What you speak of is just a loss of bearing. It happens to everyone from time to time and all instructors have their own way of punishing for it. Its going to happen so much that everybody begins to learn their own ways of controlling it.

The environment will definately change your mindset as well. I laugh everytime I think about things that happened at OCS that, at the time, I didnt really find all that funny.

For the most part, the instructors will instill you with a sort of Fear of God, where even though you recognize something as funny, you just won't laugh because you know you're not supposed to. And you'll be amazed by how much discipline you can muster sometimes.

That being said, I was not exactly known as the king of bearing. My weakness was if I had someone across from me who would crack a smile, i'd fold like a cheap tent. Usually over stuff that, looking back, wasn't close to the funniest things I'd heard there.

I think the worst was lined up in front of our racks (GET ON LINE) and we were being yelled at for something and the instructor mentioned something about "when you get up in the morning and put on your pickle suit..."

I bit my tongue, blurred my vision so i couldn't see the other candidate's face, thought about getting smoked for laughing, but it didn't work. There's something about the phrase "pickle suit" that at the time sent me and the candidate across from me into snickering fits. No idea how I didn't get firewatch the whole night that night. Incidentally, the guy who was across from me? Great guy, I was more worried about screwing him over by encouraging him to laugh. But we both graduated. He probably still thinks of me as "that a-hole."

Best time I never want to have again.

Hehe! I was really worried about laughing fits at OCS also. I'm prone to extended, uncontrollable fits of laughter for random things. Naturally I thought for sure the staff would make me crack and laugh.

Turns out, OCS is full of stuff that isn't funny at all. You can bring those things to mind whenever you feel like you're going to snap. I didn't have much of a problem with it.

But, there was this one time before lights out, where you do this whole process of mounting the rack (PREPARE TO MOUNT!) and raising your arms straight up over your head, and then slapping them down on the rack three times, yelling, "HONOR, COURAGE, COMMITTMENT!"

Anyway, we all lined up on both sides of the racks, arms straight up in the air, waiting for the next command. There was this guy, who happened to be a decent man but was headed home for sure, and I guess he goofed something up that the platoon sergeant saw. He layed into him with the funniest stuff I'd heard since I arrived. Honestly I can't remember what he said, I think a lot of what made it funny was circumstance.

Anyway, I totally lost my sh!t. I couldn't stop laughing, and my rackmate started to lose his sh!t also. Tears were running down my face I was laughing so hard and trying to keep it silent, but we had to stand there with are arms straight up the whole time. I figured my rackmate and I were hosed for laughing, but then I looked down the line and saw two rows of arms, straight up in the air, all shaking with muted laughter. The platoon sergeant must have seen it, but I guess he let it slide that one time.

Finally we got in the racks, and lights went out. I spent a good five or ten minutes laughing to myself.

Anyway...don't worry about laughing, you'll be fine. Worry more about running and stuff, because that's what will make or break you.

You won't be laughing when there are three DI's screaming in your face. You may even be the guy that pisses his pants. You "know" you will at least smile when a DI gets in your face? Have you ever had a DI in your face before? As it turns out, it's never as funny when it is happening to you.

When I was at OCS my name was first alphabetically so I always had to fill out the inspection forms for everyone else when we got inspected. When the DI got in my face and screamed at me for folding my tightey-whitey's the wrong way, I sure as **** didn't smile. However, when my turn was over and I had to follow the DI and write as he inspected everyone else, I sometimes had to tilt my head far down so that the brim of my cover blocked my face so the DI couldn't see me smile. They say some funny mother****ing stuff, but it's never that funny when it is directed at you.

I've met many people who claim that they won't be able to stop laughing, but I've yet to see someone laugh during a personalized arse-chewing.

I hope it will be a different ballgame once I'm actually there. I might as well start watching funny clips and movies and just try to hold everything. And no I have never had a DI in my face before so that's why I'm asking yall. I really appreciate the tips though. Keep em coming.

Ya I was pretty worried about that same thing when before I shipped. I once had a baseball coach chew me out pretty bad and I couldn't stop laughing at him. But at OCS you will get a crash course on discipline the first day. They will test your bearing by saying some funny sh#t but if its directed your way it wont be a laughing matter. By the last week or so things lighten up and in some cases its ok to laugh or smile. One day during drill in the squadbay my instructor had us all damn near on the floor talkin about when the Marine Corps first got the internet watching animal porn and chicks crappin in guys mouths, yea pretty graphic. And at the end we did impressions for the staff which was really funny.

You know things are getting out of control when the SIs lose their bearing... Rare, but awesome. Nothing like seeing them laugh at each other's work.

I had to do a physical test for the california highway patrol (I know its not military but hold on...)and we were told to stand in line. Soon the doors were kicked open and 5 officers with bullhorns came out yelling and screaming, calling people fat and other names trying to distract us. One guy (idiot) started screaming back at one officer only to then become surrounded like in the youtube movie with bullhorns and everything. I wanted to laugh at some of the things said but did not want the attention, and I understand the point of it all. Also if I do get into OCS I figure those chewings will be a very small taste of what to expect. Not too many get that experiance first hand.
