How/where to sell a gun?

I have never sold a gun, but would like to unload one that I have that I never shoot. I am unfamiliar with the legalities of doing so, so my question is where is the best place and what do I need to be careful of or watch out for? Maybe someone has a good link to some info? Thanks for any inputs.

I think that in Texas you can sell a gun to anyone of legal age to own it. Perhaps someone who currently lives in that state can chime in.

Josh,

You could post the question here http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=8&f=8 and you will get your answer quickly by gun people who live in Texas. You could also ask at a good sized gun shop. SOMETIMES they know the law.

It matters what state you are in and many times it matters whether you are talking about a long gun or handgun. It also matters if you are selling face to face or over the web as well.

For example in NC as a private individual you can legally sell your rifle to another private individual (as long as they can legally buy one) without any paperwork. However, to be strictly legal in NC the buyer of a handgun MUST have a purchase permit to buy from you. Trying to do otherwise, say in the parking lot of a NC gun show, and you WILL find yourself charged with a felony. Something that wouldn't go over well in Kingville.

It can get complicated so be sure the answers you get are Texas specific.

PM me with what you are selling? I might be interested..

Thanks for the tips. My concern is having it free and clear away from me, and I won't just sell it to anybody down here either, and this particular one looks the part of an 'evil' black gun.

As far as documentation goes you might just draw up a bill of sale with the description and SN and have the buyer sign that. The best (ie) bomb proof way to document that you sold it is to be sure the sale goes thru a licensed dealer. That way they have to log it into their books. They usually want a small transfer fee to do it though and if it's not required by law you may find some buyers put off by doing it that way.

Josh, You can also go here: and ask your questions. http://subguns.com/boards/sword.cgi

There are several guys on that board near Corpus/Kingsville....Ask for Doc Howie or Hog Leg Jack (former USN Pharmacy Tech). Feel free to use my name in vain.

What are you unloading? VT-31 has several gun "nuts." Depending on make/model/usage you could move it easy to the "I'm gonna build a compound" freaks:) FYI..I am one of them.
