You could go with Sir / Ma’am....

Also, you’ll often find squadron XOs frocked to O5 if they are junior (i.e., short turn between DH tour and showing back up to a ready room).
Even seen that with a Marine once (frock to LtCol). How's that for a unicorn?

When did we stop flocking officers? I was frocked to O-4 and O-5. When the O-5 list came out I was at a USAF school with the XO and a couple other guys. XO wanted to frock me in front of the class just to send the AF into tizzy, but we couldn't find CDR oak leaves anywhere.

Not even the USAF pisscutter supersized oak leaves?

Threadjack - I was at API in late '07 and some AF Captain instructor started listing her rank on a whiteboard as "Maj(Sel) Schmuckatelli." Marine Lt Col in charge of that section quashed that within a day.

At least 20 years ago.

We frocked an O4 to O5 this summer at my command. He had orders to teach at Newport and frocking him was required prior to PCS.

My SWO neighbor in Japan was frocked to O4 because of his CHENG billet. Apparently that’s how they get guys to take those orders.

That might have been a spot promote (it's another category on the fitrep IIRC) and normally those guys will pick it up on the next board, unless they really badly screw up and get bad paper for the screw up.

The other big difference is spot promotes get paid at the higher paygrade too.

There is no such rank as RANK(Select). It's stupid. "Chief Select" is equally stupid.

One of my Reserve colleagues, the instant after the previous O4 select message came out, starting addressing himself as LCDR(Sel) in his email signature. I emailed him and asked "WTF..." and never got a response. I guess being 2XFOS while on Active Duty had an impact.
