So I am starting to think more seriously about life on a ship for a couple months. Obviously the sailors in the Navy need to keep up their PT regimens. What kind of facilities and programs are available onboard while at sea?

I think I'll feel much happier and stronger, generally and not just physically, if there are good opportunities for exercise.

Well psrogers, It depends on what type of platform (Ship) you are assigned to. Their are gyms onboard almost every ship in the Navy, but the sizes of the gyms depends on the size of the ship. I was stationed on a Crusier and on the 03 deck we had a real small gym with freeweights and other ship also have tredmills onboard. Their are many ways to stay in shape. Some guys ran when they hit a liberty port also. Best of luck in staying in shape. Respectfully, Fraz

On a carrier there are different gyms scattered throughout the ship. They generally have similar equipment together so one gym might have cardio machines (bikes, treadmills, elliptical trainers) while another has weights. One nice thing about a carrier is that it is big and has a large hangar bay. On the Lincoln there was a civilian MWR person that did cardio kickboxing and yoga and other group exercises in the hangar bay. There were also officers that led specific group classes such as a spinning class. You can also bring a jumprope and jump wherever you can find space (the hangar bay or maybe the fantail). Sometimes (rarely) when flight ops are not going you can run on the flight deck but I would not recommend this because it is pretty slippery and it gets windy if the ship is moving.
